Freude is German for joy; shadenfreude is joy in another's troubles. German pronunciation rules are hard and fast, phonics works perfectly for them. And German phonics rules demand that a trailing "e" is NOT silent but is pronounced "ah".

I imagine you could say die Freud' if you were waxing poetic. Ich hab', on the other hand, is good colloquial German. Final e's do sometimes get elided.
