Criminy ... reminds me of the deconstructor in Nature's End that simulated personalities and such.

Gupta Singh's revenge on the real world.

I had a heated discussion with a Johnson and Johnson VP of sales on the subject a few years ago. He admitted there "were some privacy issues to overcome".

How bored with life mankind must have become to have time and inclination to allow his mind to wander into such hollow fantasies as this and then take the initiative to make it become reality. Something very fundamental is missing from life today. We pass over the simple treasures and infinite mysteries of God's creation and focus our attention and labor on worthless human toys like this.

Don't freak out, y'all. I speak DoDese; what they're aiming at here is an in-flight recorder for people instead of airplanes -- a black box that will enable a database to capture and classify the daily experiences of a person into a readable form. There's nothing in there about reading thoughts, mainly because a) nobody knows what "thoughts" really are or how to record them and b) the signal-to-noise ratio of the average person's thoughts would be enormously tilted towards useless noise. Instead, what they want is a kind of portable motion-capture getup -- something like the rigs they strap actors into to create computer animated characters like Gollum in THE LORD OF THE RINGS -- only this thing would record all physical data (light, sound waves, impacts, etc.) a person experiences at a given instant, plus odds and ends like orientiation, altitudes, average speeds, etc. The goal is to be able to create accurate real-time models of specfic individuals (terrorists, soldiers, etc.) interacting with the Real World for simulation purposes. They also want to use this data to help program things like exoskeletons (powered armor a la STARSHIP TROOPERS) and humanoid robots.

That's what I got out of it at least.

Don't worry, folks; no one can capture your mind or simulate God, because your mind and God both transcend mere physical reality.

The Thing in the Pentagon loves big words. My guess is that "ontology-based system" is DoDese for "first-person shooter" -- in other words, they want a video-game-like interface that not only lets you control James Bond in 007: GOLDENEYE, but lets you see, hear, smell, touch, and taste everything he does.

This is different from "being" James Bond. Experience is not the same as existence

That's the point - we get 'philosophical' robots and we no longer need people. Note - the definition of 'philiosphy' is 'non-technical'. Once these 'philosophical' robots are developed, then the bleeding hearts would insist that they have 'rights'.

Main Entry: meta·phys·ic
Pronunciation: "me-t&-'fi-zik
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English metaphesyk, from Medieval Latin metaphysica
Date: 14th century
1 a : METAPHYSICS b : a particular system of metaphysics
2 : the system of principles underlying a particular study or subject : PHILOSOPHY

Main Entry: phi·los·o·phy
Pronunciation: f&-'lä-s(&-)fE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -phies
Etymology: Middle English philosophie, from Old French, from Latin philosophia, from Greek, from philosophos philosopher
Date: 14th century
1 a (1) : all learning exclusive of technical precepts and practical arts (2) : the sciences and liberal arts exclusive of medicine, law, and theology (3) : the 4-year college course of a major seminary b (1) archaic : PHYSICAL SCIENCE (2) : ETHICS c : a discipline comprising as its core logic, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology

27 - from the RFQ - "LifeLog is interested in three major data categories: physical data, transactional data, and context or media data. “Anywhere/anytime” capture of physical data might be provided by hardware worn by the LifeLog user. Visual, aural, and possibly even haptic sensors capture what the user sees, hears, and feels. "

If all it were was a simulation then it wouldn't be a problem. But it looks like they're interested in tracking people, which is very worrying. But keep in mind that there are enormous hurdles to this. You can't just have some shadowy corner of the government crank this out, you'll need a lot of legislation to get everybody to the point where data can be shared. Even then it's pretty touch and go.

Am I to understand this technology is already existing?

Yes and no. Lots of companies have systems that pour large amounts of data into one database where it can be sorted and analyzed. And there are systems that can help spot trends and make predictions or even decide whether or not you'd be likely to respond to a direct mailing.

But these systems usually cause a lot of headaches. And scale of this is absolutely jaw dropping. It would require new technology just to handle the volume. The real problem is logistics, which would pretty much require the cooperation of every single business in the country. Even then things would just go wrong and data wouldn't be resorded correctly. And the whole thing would be very prone to crashes.

Never say never. But this isn't something the government could just casually shove down our throats. And even if they managed it wouldn't be terribly reliable

31 - "Never say never. "

Absolutely correct.

I remember, in 1989, when my brother was head of robotics at NASA-KSC, when they were doing robotic research, that thhe awarded a contract for about $1.5 million to a university in Ohio to develop a robot which 'knew' where it was, and could 'navigate' around a room by itself. They were working on a 'robot' which could 'automatically' waterproof the shuttle orbiter, without programming exactly where it was. It seems to me we now have similar technology working in robotic 'lawnmowers', which can now navigate around your yard, mowing the grass.

Admittedly, my 'forecast' is very long term, but the steps are being taken, and this RFQ is a major one.

I agree, and it is "this is absolutely jaw dropping". However, it seems that the Federal Government, and particularly the IRS has accomplished that before, and look at what we are trying to do with our latest task - to change the belief systems of 1.2 billion muslims.

Don't put anything beyond a determined America/American.

"RFID tags, tiny tracking devices the size of a grain of dust that can be inserted in virtually any product, are about to enter the retail world."

WOW, a sort of lojack for all purchases? And, they want a LifeLog on me, all paid by with tax money.
Meanwhile, the U.S. borders are completely wide-open, our high-tech is all being outsourced to foreign countries, our databases with our personal information are being run by foreigners in foreign countries and according to the CIA, the terrorists are looking for soft targets.
Who prioritizes and allocates our resources in this way? Dr. Laura Callahan with the degrees from an unaccredited univerisity at Homeland Security?

RFID tags - yes, it is amazing, and the lady said that Walmart is about to require that they be placed in all their products, in order to be sold by Walmart. Which will make them universal.

Oh no, not WalMart!
If this RFID is on the price-tag or some other tag, I could remove it after I purchase it. And, WalMart could still keep a closer eye on their inventory and reduce the amount of stolen goods. But, I suppose a thief could easily remove the tag with the RFID as well, so that's why they want the RFID embedded into the goods.
Maybe the LifeLogs will eliminate thieves before they have a chance to steal anything. Good Grief! Beam me up!
As I see it, high-tech crooks could really screw-up this RFID system. And, since all of our high-tech is being outsourced to foreign countries, where corruption is accepted as a part of everyday life, you can be sure that sophisticated crooks will be playing with this.
Now, if we can convince WalMart that this is not the boon to their business that they think it is, given the potential crime mess possible, maybe they will stick to the methods they have now. And the current methods are working, so why fix what aint broke? High-tech has a break-even point, and I think they may be about to step over it.
