Pox-Like Outbreak Reported

At least 19 people in three Midwestern states have contracted a disease related to smallpox, marking the first outbreak of the life-threatening illness in the United States, federal heath officials said yesterday.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, concerned that the illness could spread, issued a nationwide alert to doctors and public health officials to be on the lookout for more cases.

"We have an outbreak," said James Hughes, director of the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases in Atlanta. "I'd like to keep it relatively small. I don't want any more cases. We're doing everything we can to try to contain this."

Single shipment blamed Officials think the source is a shipment of 25 to 30 of the animals that a South Milwaukee distributor obtained from another distributor in Villa Park, Ill., who got them from Texas. The Illinois distributor's shipment also included a Gambian rat that was sick at the time it was in contact with the prairie dogs.

I bet this is the Villa Park, IL dealer...

The armadillos are past the Southern part of your state.

About four years ago,I saw a roadkill near the 170 milestick on I44,give or take five miles.I noticed the nearest milestick at the time because my wife was sleeping and it was the farthest North I had ever seen one.

"Also, does anyone know which two pet stores in Milwaukee I should be staying away from?"

One I know of is Hoffer TropicLife Pets located at the NW corner of Good Hope Road and 76th Street in far NW Milwaukee.

The store was never shut down and thousands of people have entered it since the outbreak was first reported on May 16th.

Remember Milwaukee is the town where 400,000 people were sickened by crytosporidiam (sp?) and over 100 immune deficient people died at that time. For two weeks prior, the Milwaukee Water Works was receiving calls complaining of cloudy/sediment ladem water and nothing was done. The very same officials still have their jobs and are presiding over the monkeypox outbreak.

I don't drink the tap water here and I won't go in a pet store here again.

We have a little, domestically-bred African pygmy hedgehog. We wouldn't give her up for the world. Didn't today's dogs and cats descend from wild cats and dogs in Africa?

While much about monkeypox virus is unclear, it is not believed to be as deadly as smallpox. Monkeypox is believed to have a mortality rate of between 1 percent and 10 percent, compared with a mortality rate of about 30 percent for smallpox.

I guess this is suppose to be good news?

Makes it more like SARS, so it's bad enough. If you were born too late to be vaccinated and want to be, NIH is having clinical trials. See NIH Seeks Subjects For Smallpox Vaccine Trials.

The subject here is not a domestically-bred Gambian Rat, if it was it would not be carrying monkeypox or infecting other domestically-bred pets. Someone felt a need to take this Rat out Africa and bring it here, why?

I also feel that people need to leave all wild species of animals alone and stop trying to domesticate them. People need to stop breeding these animals that were meant to be wild and if they did then the novelty of having new exotic animal breds to domesticate would end. Hedgehogs, Prairie Dogs, Gambian Rats, and so forth should have never been made into domestic pets to begin with. No animal should be forced to become domesticated because someone thinks it cool to have a pet other than a typical pet as in a cat or dog. Only in the last 25 years or so have these types of exotic animals been domesticated and sold in pet shops. Hedgehogs came pets when the Sonic Hedgehog video game came out. The fad of owning a hedgehog has probably worn out and now people are buying Prairie Dogs. You cannot release these domestically-bred animals back into the wild, but people can stop breeding them and buying them to end the cycle of these animals being kept as pets.

But I will breed hedgehogs and offer them as pets. They are the perfect pet and the risk of a domestically bred hedgehog is minute.

I think you missed my point - it not the domesticated exotic pets - it's the people who cannot settle on just any domesticated exotic pet that is already out there, it the people who think they have to pull something new out of the wild and domesticate it. As long as people are willing to buy exotic pets, then we will be seeing more and more new and different exotic pets. It is an ugly cycle and people need to stop keeping these new "fad" animals as pets.
