To be more accurate Alterman should have said:

"we really just lack the capacity to tell the truth."

Last night I watched the book sellers show on C-Span (Pat Shroeder, Molly Ivans, Al Franken, Bill O'Reilly), and sat there dumbfounded as Al Franken went on and on about conservative talk radio, etc etc, and I thought to myself, they just aren't even in the same sphere of reality as the rest of us. The other wacky moment was Molly Ivans saying she wasn't a liberal "I'm Molly Ivans", then later stating she was in favor of income redistribution. I guess you're right, Molly, you're not a liberal, you're a communist.
