Greenpeace tells coal industry to shut up shop

June 10 2003

International environmental watchdog Greenpeace yesterday called on the coal industry to stop producing coal and to invest instead in clean and renewable energy.

"The coal industry bears a heavy responsibility in inflicting damage to the environment," a Greenpeace statement quoted one of its activists as telling a conference of coal companies in Bali.

"This industry should stop promoting coal and start investing in renewable energy," the activist, Red Constantino, was quoted as saying.

Greenpeace said Constantino told delegates at CoalTrans Asia 2003, an annual gathering of the world's largest coal companies, to act against the threat of climate change caused by burning coal.

"The coal industry needs to clean up its act. Because of climate change, the only way it can do this is to phase itself out starting today, not tomorrow," he said.

He said the effects of climate change are expected to be greatest in developing countries in terms of loss of life and relative effects on investment and their economies.

Constantino was quoted as citing floods, droughts and rising sea levels as among the effects of climate change.

Coal accounts for over 40 per cent of the world's annual carbon emissions, Greenpeace figures show.

South East Asia is a large consumer of coal. The watchdog group said that coal imports to the region, largely from Australia, are expected to rise by 14 per cent a year to 30 million tonnes in 2010.

You know these weenies rant and rave about polution from coal and oil but I haven't seen them come up with any viable alternative that everyone can use. Until they have that done they should just shut their mouth! They are living in a dream world!

Excellent idea. For decades now we have had a clean, non-polluting, practical and virtually unlimited power source and because of a bunch of Chicken Littles we have been afraid to make use of it. If we were to just build nuke plants, we could stop using coal, tear down the dams, eliminate shortages of electricity and bring the price down significantly, all while doing no damage to the environment.

The only downside is a small amount of radioactive waste and we have literally millions of acres of uninhabited desert where we can safely bury it.

And recycle the fuel rods to minimize the radioactive waste that has to be stored. I'm with you.

Coal power releases a greater number of radionuclides into the environment via fly ash than any nuclear station is allowed to. A nuclear plant is allowed to only emit steam.

Nuclear power also has a very good safety record compared to coal. You here about Chernobyl and Three Mile Island all the time but the deaths these to are alleged to have caused is nowhere near what coal has wrought.

If these morons understood that nuclear power is by far the most viable form of green energy out there we could consider taking them seriously.

It's heading for summer, and the Greenpeace activists are out in force at all the tourist sites. Fresh-faced kids who are thinking globally and acting locally, glowing with the inner knowlege that they're doing something to save the planet. Take a look at them sometime. They're the new Moonies.

"Got a second for Greenpeace?"

It is time to open the high-grade coal deposits, located in Southwestern U.S.that Bill Clinton designated as Wilderness-land.

Greenpeace won't be happy until humans go back to living in caves (except them of course, they get to keep their houses and redwood decks).
