White House Throws Principle Out Window

June 10, 2003

We spent the first hour of Monday's program on the idea that we're going to extend the child tax credit to families that don't pay taxes. Many of you told me that I was making a huge mistake opposing this. If you think you're conservatives, you have a long way to go, because what some of you people were saying is not conservative at all. It's purely political.

However, I have to hand it to you people. You were right in one sense. The White House is leaning on reluctant Republican leaders in the House to act fast on making millions of low-income families (who don't pay taxes) eligible for the 400 dollar per child tax rebates already in the works for middle-income parents. Ari Fleischer said the president's advice to the House Republicans is to pass it, and to send it to him so he can sign it.

The bottom line is the White House wants this and they want it now. They want these people who don't pay taxes to be given the child care exemption of $600 up to $1,000. Principle is out the window, and political calculation is the coin of the realm. Once again illustrating that, but for this program, no one is talking about core conservative principles out there.

Rush nails it again.. and almost as I have said here over and over, that these people are not conservatives, they are fakes.

This is just a welfare program.

The justification is that these low income people pay sales taxes. So, give them a real break - cut sales tax rates.

How can is be a tax "rebate" when no taxes were paid in the first place? It's WELFARE. Socialism.

Vote buying. Might work, but it isn't conservative or principled.

Good point, except for one thing. The Federal Government does not charge a sales tax. Only states have such taxes. So let the tax credit come from the states.

Won't work.

And he isn't doing well at earning mine again (CFR, AWB, Patriot Act...)

Rush struggled a bit with the notion that money that wasn't in the hands of the government is good money. He should remind himnself that taking from one and giving to another is classic liberalism. I don't expect that he will get it right 100% of he time but this one is important.

I think it's pure welfare. But at least it gets the money out of Washington. The liquor stores are gonna love this.

One interesting admission came out in this whole debate. Politicians justify it by saying the poor and low income workers pay payroll taxes.

So the politicians are on record admitting SOCIAL SECURITY is a TAX!

Let's all have a payroll tax holiday instead. How's that for being fair.

Of course. But in this state we had the same debate about giving nontaxpayers "refunds" of income tax and the same sales tax argument was made - and nobody pointed out the obvious. If you want to give non-income tax paying sales tax payers a tax cut, don't give them a welfare check, cut the sales tax.

Can anybody tell me what happens to this "tax credit" when we go to a flat tax or a sales tax, instead of the current tax system ...??

As much as I generally agree with Rus, I don't get it in this particular case. What is "conservative" about opposing a measure that shifts wealth from the individuals who earned in in the first place to the government, who didn't? Morever, even if it is political, what's the alternative? Handing the Rats a political issue on a platter so that they can increase their chances of winning the next election and then raising my taxes? Doesn't sound like much of a plan to me.

The problem with the payroll tax holiday rationale is that the issue has already been dealt with - the earned income credit (EIC) was put in place specifically to grant payroll tax relief to low-income workers. In fact, many get back refundable EIC that is much more than the "payroll taxes" they pay and this has become just another socialist wealth redistribution program.

The EIC has many problems and should be restructured if the intent is to grant a payroll tax holiday, but the present outrage over the child credit is just more DEM smoke and mirrors.

Duh! Rush should have seen this two plus years ago.

The problem is child tax credits even for people who pay income taxes is redistribution. I don't hear Rush saying anything about that.

"So, give them a real break - cut sales tax rates."

HUH??! They already DON'T pay income tax. These same people are provided the SAME services BY the State -- that's me AND you. They also get to vote for Hitlery...

So what would make things "fair"?? Would you servicing breakfast in bed to a fellow citizen in the under $30k bracket make you feel better?

BTW -- THIS IS PURE SOCIALISM folks -- nothing less.

You'd be shocked if you saw what really goes on in the realm of Earned Income Credit tax "refunds."
