June 23 issue — Blair Hornstine has near perfect SATs, an A++ average, an impressive list of community-service activities and an acceptance letter from Harvard. But on Thursday, when her classmates at New Jersey’s Moorestown High School celebrate graduation, Hornstine will be in self-imposed exile, traumatized, her lawyers say, by widespread hostility that has made her a social pariah. And all this future lawyer wanted was a little justice.

My gosh, what a bunch of self centered freaking idiots. Her parents are disgusting. Her lawyer is disgusting. The school board is disgusting , and the fellow that wanted to share the honor is disgusting. This is what happens when disgusting people get together, they fight over absolutely nothing. (I am sorry, but in the big scheme of life, being recognized as top dog in high school does not amount to a whole lot)

A very stupid Newsweek article! (is there any other kind?).

It states that her classmates suspect her father, who is a Federal judge, of influencing the state court decision and cattily remarks that they obviously don't understand the difference between Federal and State courts. Now, I ask you, who is being stupid here? Newsweek or the kids? Has the author never heard of "one hand washing the other"?

Another Moanica for Bubba, I presume.

Friends also defend her. “Blair is a really strong person, the type who doesn’t want to show her disability,” says close pal Jenny Hussong...

Except in court, when it could win you a cool $2.7 million.

If she finished first -- under the rules -- she should get the honor. Alone.

If the rules were flawed, change them for the next class.

Can you imagine being the poor guy who might marry this girl? Can you imagine what it will be like to work with this person when she someday enters the workforce?

Do we need another young American woman who mistakenly believes she IS the center of the universe? Haven't we got enough of them?

Yup! the whole things is much ado about nothing. That neighborhood needs to re-examine itself.

I'm with you. She had the best GPA, she earned everything she got.

Some people on this thread sound like the Senate Republicans. She should no more share the honor of Valedictorian than then Senate Republicans should have agreed to share power with the Dems. Like Republicans, she WON. Since when should the winner have to compromise?

She attended the school. Teachers attested to the fact she was graded the same as any other student. She was admitted to HARVARD. You think they admit anyone to Harvard?

Poor kid. Book smart but street stupid, I think. She should take a year off and go help the poor in India or something. Let it all blow over. Come back quietly and learn the timely art of holding one's tongue and choosing battles carefully. Nothing arouses people's hatred like a smart, pretty girl who doesn't sweeten the pot with plenty of humble, self-effacing niceness.

I wonder what Judge Hornstine and his cronies did to get all this publicity for his daughter?

I suggest that anyone who swallows this BS rent themselves a car, drive to this exceptionally well-heeled suburb and talk to the people who live there about this particular story.

I can provide anyone with easy directions from DC, Philadelphia or New York.

Oh, did I mention that I grew up there?

She won it and she will probably get it ( But it is less than fair when nobody else could obtain the grades she did). But every one else has the right to shun her too. That is the funny thing about demanding to get everything that you deserve. You often get the narrow thing you are demanding, but lose everything else.

I tell my kids that you can have anything that they want in life. If they demand it they will only get it once though. If they want a fancy bike they can scream and scream and steal it. They will have their bike - once! After that they will never get one again.

But why should other students suffer because one student and her parents gamed the system.

That sounds a bit like the kind of statement a democrat in congress would make (Hillary maybe). You a democrat?

She played by the rules the way they are written. Period. Now the losers want to change the rules after losing. Wanna bet they would be just fine with the rules if they had won and she had lost?

I tell my kids that you can have anything that they want in life....

I always ask people who are in personal conflicts (kids or otherwise) "Would you rather be right, or be happy?". Sometimes being right is worth the price, sometimes it isn't.

Her "winning" this battle is a foolish fight that need not be fought. If this young lady is God's gift to the world as she claims to be, let her prove it at Harvard and in the workplace. Her parents have no business teaching her to fight such a senseless battle. What is her reward? She is forever known as a troublemaker who goes to the mat on things that have no lasting impact.
