How does that go again?

You're with us or with the terrorists.

Seems the Saudis are with one of Bush's Axis of Evil.

And they are with Bush. And worse, he is with them because they are "our friends the Saudis".

So where are we?

I'm sorry that this isn't a "Bush in Jeans", but a Bush in genuflect.

The Iranian mullahs are NOT the friends of Saudi Arabia either. They are offering sanctuary to fellow muslims, and more importantly, because they are the guardians of the faith because the two most important muslim sites are located in SA. I think they are required to offer.

In the future, when Iraq has oil wealth, and can compete with the Saudis, the Saudis will be in big trouble. They are already running into difficulty, being blackmailed by the terrorists today. Perhaps we just ran a circle around them, and they will bring about their own downfall. Remember the recent bombings in Saudi Arabia?

Maybe the Saudis just want to kick the Shi'ite our of them, and bring them to the light of the Sunni?

Seriously, though, there can't be that close of ties between these guys, as they're from competing and rival sects. I'm sure the Saudi option isn't one that anyone would be really thrilled with.

"Get all the bad guys in one spot, makes it easier to vaporize them!"

Shiites and Sunnis alike, apparently.

So much for the notion that these two factions of the "religion" are not aligned.

They are aligned, in support of world terror. They are aligned in trying to take their people back to earlier, barbaric times.

Am I not getting something here?

I'm confused also. Iranian mullahs are Shi'ite. Saudi Arabia's state religion is officially a Wahhabi branch of Sunni Islam, although they do have Shi'ites. Shi'ites constitute 10% of Muslims. I thought the Wahhabi Sunni Muslims didn't like the Shi'ite Muslims, believing them to be heretics.

Maybe the Sows are trying to help pull out the rug from under the reigning Iran Shia mullah regime.

This is good. Let's put them all in one place. It makes the clean up effort easier later. In fact we should encourage the IDF to exile Yassir and his ilk to Saudi Arabia.

They can make the country as nutty as they want with the fundamentalism. They act up outside their borders though, and they get zapped. Other muslim countries get to stay moderate.

I equate it to "Catholic" countries that aren't the vatican, jewish enclaves that aren't Jerusulem. Mecca and Medina are the centers of faith. You wanna keep that place fundy, fine. Let's just put all the fundies there. Saudi Arabia should be the place for them. Free Iraq and Iran. We have guides. Turkey and Jordan aren't exactly our best buddies in the world, but we tolerate each other quite well. Jordan is a monarchy, Turkey is parliamentary. Both majority muslim, but not whacked out of their skulls. That is quite doable.

I'm sure the Saudis are aware of that and will make sure that any guesthouse they offer is well away from anything even vaguely looking like civilization. There is a great deal of antagonism between the Wahabbi and the Shiia.

The Saudi's actually did us and the Persians a favor on this one, and I wouldn't be suprised if Bush had called them to suggest it. The reason is simple, Sun Tzu pegged it 2,000 years ago.

Always leave your enemy a way out.

It shouldn't be a real way out, of course. You have to give him the impression that there is somewhere he can go, so he's not forced to make a last stand and fight like a cornered animal. Saudi Arabia is perfect. If things get too hot, they'll try to go there as a government in exile. That may seem like a better option than being attached to a tree (by the neck), but would place them in the same country that has, that's right, U.S. troops.

What we don't want is them to make a last stand that they could survive. Getting the mullahs to cut and run is infinitely preferable.

I will wager you whatever you like that the Saudis are giving them support.

Do you really believe that the Saudis want a Democratic Iran added to the possibly of a Democratic Iraq and would do anything to further that happening?

It would be the end of the Saudis.

Hope you're right. Doubt it.

The photo that heads this post is of Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal and Iranian President Mohamed Khatami.

Although the Iranians deny it, one of the main reasons of FM al-Faisal's visit to Iran concerned members of al-Qa'ida that Iran allegedly has in custody.

The Saudis are most interested in Said al-Adel, who is widely believed to have given the order for the Riyadh attacks. Al-Adel is also on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists.

The Iranians say that they have al-Qa'ida members in custody but have been unable to identify them.

Yeah, right.

Also the Egyptians, it is reported, are keen to acquire members of Egyptian Islamic Jihad that Iran has put under arrest. EIJ is Zawahiri's outfit. Members of EIJ took part in the attack on the US embassies in East Africa 1998.

Do you really believe that the Saudis want a Democratic Iran added to the possibly of a Democratic Iraq and would do anything to further that happening?

I really believe that the Saudis want to go on being the rulers of Saudi Arabia. Since they are both rich and weak, this means being everyone's friend, and no one's enemy.

They need the U.S. placated for power, and their own people placated for stability. Offering the mullahs sanctuary, in this context, makes sense. It quietly but potently advances our goals, and makes them look like they care about their Islamic brethren. Win/win.

In the context of opposing us and a Westernized Iran, offering the mullahs refuge is pointless. If they lose power in Iran, they won't ever be able to return. Sanctuary for them would be symbolic. The new government of Iran would be displeased, if not hostile, to the Saudis, America would be displeased, if not hostile, as well. The Saudi people would have been just as happy with the symbolic gesture of solidarily, so why make foriegn enemies in the process? The Saudi royals may be duplicitous, but they're not stupid.

As I said earlier, this move only makes sense in the first context. I realize this is more complicated than 'They're all Muslim, hence, they're all out to get us', but I think you'll agree that it makes more sense.

I agree, this is too soon in the process for an off the cuff offer of sanctuary. By making this offer so soon, before there is any obvious threat, it makes the Iranian leadership appear weak and threatened. Perhaps more weak and threatened than they really are. This looks like a favor to us.

The Saudis want quiet and stability. The Iranians have threatened and blackmailed them for years. The Khobar Towers attack was a message directed at THEM from Iran and not a message directed at us. Same with the recent bombings.

Saudi has cooperated with Iran since Khobar because they are threatened and fear Iran more than us. But they would not hate to see the Mullahs fall.

Actually it is quite a stroke of luck.
Makes it clearer to the IQ-challenged to see the true nature of the Saudis.

There for everyone to see forever, but just now knocking at the consciousness of the stubborn, the blind, the naive.

Saudi Arabia is begging to become the next Afghanistan and Iraq...
