Hostage situations are so damned successful... When one comes up you know you're dealing with some pretty dim bulbs. It's almost as pointless as failing to pull over when an officer orders you to.

From the Chicago Tribune:

Gunman takes hostages at Plainfield bank

Tribune staff reports

June 17, 2003, 2:52 PM CDT

A gunman was holed up with hostages inside a bank in southwest suburban Plainfield this afternoon as police surrounded the bank and brought in negotiators to try to resolve the crisis.

There were reports of shots having been fired, but it was not known if anyone was injured.

The incident started about 1 p.m. when a man entered the First National Bank of Illinois at 135th Street and Illinois Highway 59, brandished a weapon and demanded money, according to authorities.

A teller triggered a silent alarm, and police responded. The man reacted by taking an unknown number of hostages and sealing himself inside the building.

Police sealed off an area of several blocks surrounding the bank, which is in an outdoor mall. Members of the Plainfield, Shorewood and Crest Hill police departments and the Will County Sheriff's department were at the scene.

When one comes up you know you're dealing with some pretty dim bulbs.

That's what makes them so scary -- no telling what sort of stupidity the criminal will decide to do.

Geez Louise, it looks like the robbers were inspired by the TV movie about the North Hollywood bank robbery.

Prayers for the hostages.

"The bank is adjacent to a strip mall, which may have been evacuated for security reasons."

Journalists are so darn bright, aren't they? Why else in the world would they evacuate it....because they ran out of Rocky Road Ice Cream?

JustPiper: just to clear things up before you think I was insulting you, I wasn't. I was commenting on the Darwin-like journalists we have out there. ;-)

Dear Heavenly Father, please give the hostages courage and peace.

Please bring this situation to a quick and safe resolution for all concerned.

Please give wisdom to the officers, and comfort to the families as they await the outcome.

"Geez Louise, it looks like the robbers were inspired by the TV movie about the North Hollywood bank robbery."

I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to blame TV again for violence; but on the other hand, let's hope they didn't get inspired and buy kevlar suits.

Prayers for the hostages going up.

It's a busy time of day there.

CLTV- two people being held hostage, making progress with negotiations, two released, one male with health problems, one female. No injuries reported. Police Chief Bennett said it is the First National Bank of Plainfield. State, County, Local, Joliet SWAT and FBI on scene.

NBC news has Sky 5 over bank.

This is just like Dog Day...

Guy tried to rob the bank. Alarm was sounded. Robber was stuck inside. One of the hostages played sick. So the robber released him.

He's probably negotatiing for a plane now.
