“This year’s school grades demonstrate that when we set high standards and work hard, all children can learn”

No truer words. How will the NEA spin this against Gov. Bush? We will know soon enough.

RE your post #20 - I think they are in fact honest ones. I noticed the "D" and "F" schools seem to be high schools, where the students have been in school longer and have been socially promoted in the past. The "A" schools seem to me to be mostly elementary schools, some middle schools, and least frequently, the high schools.

Yes; it will be interesting to see what negative press release the FL teachers union web site will post in response. LOL... :)

CLICK HERE for today's statement by the FL Teachers Union president, in response to today's grading of schools. He fails to mention in his statement that grades were based on a variety of factors in addition to the actuial test scores (like, how many students were tested, and how many students showed gains from last year's tests). Also, he fails to commend Gov Bush for the unprecedented attention and leadership Gov Bush has provided to educators and studens in this state. It really bugs me when they never give him even the slightest bit of credit, when in fact Gov Bush deserves so much credit for turning around what was nothing short of a sinking ship.

Congratulations to Jeb and all of Florida's teachers who worked hard to produce these encouraging results!

Our Governor has consistently proven that his ideas, when implemented, produce the kinds of results that liberals can only promise, but never deliver.

Florida's schools still have room for improvement, but this news proves that significant gains are being made, and there is no reason why this trend should not continue.

Thank you. It's not surprising in the least, though it STILL fills me with disgust.

Nice of them to praise the hard work of students and teachers. Nice to see the union is 'pleased' at the rise in test scores.

Yet even with the numbers staring them in their faces, they refuse to endorse the FCAT, the scores of which they are praising. Such willful blindness in order never to admit you're wrong is what's destroying the Democrat party. It's really sad to watch sometimes.

Thanks for the news, summer! This is encouraging, because it shows that setting tough standards and following through will produce results.

You are SO lucky to have Jeb as a governor. He is doing a wonderful job and is setting a great example.

The editors at the St. Petersberg Times are going to be up all night tonight trying to figure out a way to spin this so Bush looks bad.

They'll just ignore it. Like all news that would put a Republican administration in positive light.

Of course, they could complain that it would have been higher if only MORE MONEY were spent on schools.

This is great news! My son's school missed an "A" last year by one point. They all worked so hard this year to make sure that they got an "A" this time and they did it! I am so impressed with all the teacher's and staff at my son's school. People in my school district are starting to switch their kids from the private schools to the public schools because the public schools are so much better these days. Gov. Bush's plan is bringing out the best in the students and empowering the teachers. Thank you Gov.Bush!

Jeb is also my governor. I think he is terrific and hope to see him run for president one day. He has done great things for this state and will put Florida in the republican column in 2004.
