Gephardt: Davis Recall Bad for GOP

Posted: June 17, 2003 at 6:45 p.m.

SUNNYVALE (BCN) -- Rep. Richard Gephardt, D-Mo., said today that he does not understand how recalling Gov. Gray Davis will help California solve its budget shortfall and begin an economic recovery.

Gephardt, a Democratic candidate for President, spoke to reporters following his address to the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group's Good Government Luncheon in Sunnyvale.

"For the life of me, I don't understand the situation -- how we improve anything by jerking people out of office," Gephardt said.

Gephardt compared the recall to Republican efforts to impeach President Bill Clinton in 1998. He said the Clinton impeachment ultimately cost the Republicans in the 1998 Congressional elections.

"When they carried it too far they got in some real trouble with the American people," Gephardt said.

While President George W. Bush is gaining a lot of media attention this week for his prodigious fundraising in preparation for next year's election, Gephardt believes that campaign cash can not take the place of ideas to solve the nation's problems.

"Big ideas and big choices are more important that big fundraisers," Gephardt said.

The Missouri congressman does not believe any of President Bush's ideas are working.

"I do not believe that George Bush is doing a good job on any front," Gephardt said.

Gephardt is scheduled to travel to Los Angeles later today where he will address the Service Employees International Union on Wednesday.

How's that saying go? So goes California, so goes the nation? Something like that.

Am I correct in saying that the recall is getting signatures from The People? If so, I'm sure The Dick thinks they were all forced to sign.

Either this guy is quite ill or he's a first-rate Clymer.

Either way Gephardt is a disaster.

Ayup: perfect summary of the blindness of the control-freak beauracrat who thinks the world cannot run with him.

Rep. Richard Gephardt, D-Mo., said today that he does not understand...

Soon to become my second favorite phrase, right after "...Congress shall pass no laws..."

Grey Davis and the Democrats are absolutely, unquestionably, going to make the recall election a referdendum on what they'll call "Do Nothing" Republicans, who care more about partisanship than about fixing the economy.

If they win, then it will be a HUGE victory for the Democrats, and convey significant momentum.

The odds are in Davis's favor that he will win -- the left has an awesome get out the vote machine in Calif. and the right has nothing ... and if the recall ends up being consolidated with the primary in March '04, the odds for Davis are even better, since he can ride a high Democratic turnout to vote in a contested Presidential contest on the D side, with no offsetting R contest.

I've mentioned it before in this context, but it bears repeating -- the tide turned against George H.W. Bush when the Democrats pulled off a suprise victory in November 1991 with Harris Wofford in Pennsylvania. No one saw that coming, and all the issues Wofford ran on (economy, health care, etc.) were exactly what Clinton ran on. That win put wind in the sails that never dropped.

Little Dickie, the crooked union stooge, doesn't see how the GOP could benefit fron Davis' recall.

Well I can think of one benefit, Red Davis' political career will be finished and the GOP can turn their attention to finishing Little Dickie and Tiny Tom.

Gephardt believes the recall is not good for the GOP? Hmmm...in DemonRAT, Orwellian double-speak that means the recall MUST be good for EVERYONE except the DemonRATS.
