SACRAMENTO (AP) - The nation's largest pension fund voted today to offset rising health insurance costs by boosting fees for certain medical services -- a move critics say will hurt CalPERS members, especially retirees.

The higher fees imposed by the California Public Employees' Retirement System for emergency room visits will curb costs by discouraging members from visiting the emergency room when a regular doctor's visit will do, said board member and insurance consultant Sidney Abrams.

California State Employees Association President Perry Kenny said the plan unfairly shifts the cost of medical care to the workers.

Is it unfair for the person receiving the service to pay for that service? Why is someone else obligated to pay for it? Union nitwit.

``A hundred percent is a hundred percent,'' he said. ``They shouldn't have to pay anything.''

A. The politicians who approved that contract should be shot. "Hey it's only taxpayer money".

B. The "gimme gimme" "you owe me" mentality of these people makes me want to puke. So what if our kids are destitute and end up living in what amounts to the third world. "I want mine". Disgusting.

Actually what they should institute is a sliding scale fee for the ER. The more emergent the problem the less the fee. come in for a heart attack, no copay, come in for a common cold, or a rash you've had for 3 weeks, you pay all the charges.

The health committee recommended that emergency room visits cost $75 each, but the full board voted 7-5 today to cap the fee at $50 per visit.
