If they tried that, they would probably try Louisiana. I wish they would try Mexico and then close the borders.

Dammit. I have combat auditions next weekend - some other enterprising HATters must go in my stead.

Public hearings are close to REAL COMBAT.... Think I can make one. You know the liberals will make some of these, so this is posted to get our side there.

O.K. Let's see. In the upper right corner, a section of 25 is almost completely surrounded by 12. And in the lower left corner, district 29 is an island in the middle of 9. What's that all about?

District 9 would pretty much loop around District 29 on the north, east, and west, but that keeps all of Sheila Jackson Lee's voters concentrated. Federal law, ya know.

Do you think they'll allow that much gerrymandering in the lines of Dist. 9..... That is a snake if there ever was one.....

Gerrymandering is not illegal, although it can be successfully challenged if it is discriminatory.

If this map were drawn in such a way that it eliminate all Democrats, it would not be upheld. Similarly, if it were drawn to prevent hispanic areas from being able to elect a hispanic representative, that would also cause it to be tossed.

But you can have all the snakes you want.

Gerrymandering is not illegal

I think it depends on the state. Some states have laws that mandate counties & precincts remain undivided, as much as is practicable.

One of the objections to the map which will undoubtedly be reintroduced is that it divides cities like Houston and Austin among many congressmen.

The effect of that, of course, is that it divides liberal urban centers and dilutes them into districts more likely to elect a conservative.

Naturally, I see that as a plus, while Democrats hate it. But it has another benefit. Instead of having a couple of congressmen who represent a city, suddenly there are many. If anything, this makes the cities have more effective representation in Congress.
