Eugene Zebulon Hall finally had a proper burial, 139 years after his death.

Descendants of the Civil War-era soldier gathered Saturday in Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville to dedicate a new tombstone correcting a stonemason's error from long ago.

Hall, a sergeant in the 20th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War, died of gangrene from a leg wound suffered June 2, 1864, before the Battle of Petersburg, Va.

In Cooperstown, NY, there is a very large (30"x50"?) grave for (IIRC) James Fenimore Cooper's wife with a long inscription the last line of which reads (IIRC):

a

and for these our g rt eful tears they hallowed shrine.
(with a "^" under the "a").

Lots of old graves hereabouts have similar corrections. Wonder if the buyer got a rebate for corrections?

If you ever get to Pittsburgh, I recommend a visit to the GAR plot at Allegheny Cemetery. It is a beautiful spot. I grew up in the neighborhood and it was the spot where the neighborhood Memorial Day parade ended each year with ceremonies, prayers and a 21 gun salute. There are BTW about a half dozen Confederate vets buried there as well.
