Gun-control advocates yesterday taunted presidential candidate Howard Dean, calling him an extremist and not their kind of Democrat.
"Former Vermont Governor Dean says he's from the 'Democrat wing of the Democratic party.' As far as gun-safety advocates are concerned, give us a Democrat from some other wing of the Democratic Party, please," the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said in a press release.

In the past unions have been reluctant to back any nominee. The reason was that all the nominees were pro labor on all the issues. From the Union's stand point it did not make a difference which Democrat got the nomination.
But that has changed with the media, academia, and teh greenies taking over much of the Democratic party, the Unions have a much reduced clout. Men like Dean and Kerry feel no need to follow the Union line. They may learn that was a dumb thing to do.
The Unions now know they can no longer elect a candiate to office. Many in the AFL think that to regain their clout in the Democratic party they must prove they can get the nomination for any candidate they back.
If the Unions do so, future Democratic candidates can't pander to the Greens by working to shut down constrution and manufacturing. The AFL and Auto workers would like to reduce the Greenies influence in the Democratic party.
There is no better way to do that than to nominate a man who recieved a primary union endorcement. That bodes good for Gephardt.
The media does not have any clout. It they did President Carter would have served two terms, and President Mondale would have eeked out a close win in 84.
Unions do have clout. They are going to have to prove it to the media... Perhaps they will.
Dean has it backwards - gun rights are a federal issue under the 2nd - the right to bear arms is guaranteed under the 2nd and the states cannot infringe it under the 14th.
