Correct! We had a terrible hailstorm in Hutchinson, KS back in the late 50s or early 60s where the hailstones averaged about 6" in diameter. They were shaped liked doughnuts with the hole not going all the way through.
The local paper even reported that someone had found a hailstone the size of a football.
Everyone put the darned things in their freezers for the doubting Thomases that were sure to come along later. I'll bet some people still have 'em.

I heard one report that they were the size of volleyballs!

That same storm system spawned a storm in Theyer county that put out 12-15 inches of Rain during the 6 hours that it stayed stationary over the county, not to mention the 4 tornados.
