THE STONES WERE SAVED AND PLACED IN A FREEZER AT THE RESIDENCE AND TWO NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EMPLOYEES WERE SENT TO ASSESS THE DAMAGE AND RECORD THE SIZE. THE HAILSTONE MEASURED 6.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH A CIRCUMFERENCE OF 17.3 INCHES.
THIS COMPARES TO THE POTTER NEBRASKA HAILSTONE ON JULY 12, 1928. THE POTTER NEBRASKA HAILSTONE WAS 5.4 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND WEIGHED APPROXIMATELY 1.5 POUNDS.

Good thing that the hailstorm didn't kill the electric power....

Can you imagine getting caught driving down a freeway with that kind of hail? I'm surprised there weren't any fatalities.

Is it normal hail,
or is it small ice comets
from the depths of space?

Did it have a JDAM kit attached to it?

Is it normal hail, or is it small ice comets from the depths of space? Easy enough to tell, section one. Hail has a regular layered structure, like a pearl, or tree rings.
If that doesn't suit you, isotopic percentages in the water should settle it.

California, acting on the tradgedy of Nebraska, now requires that homes be built with at least 1/2" steel rooves and that the hailstones be collected and used as grey water. All homes must be upgraded by 2004 or face foreclosure.

Fortean Society bump. Keep you eyes peeled for frozen fish.

As a historical/philosophical side point, Aristotle noted--saying that any farmer knows--that larger hail falls faster than smaller hail. He was of course correct; larger hail achieves a higher terminal velocity as the weight increases as the cube of diameter while the surface area increases as the square.

In Waco, Texas, a few years back some grapefruit-sized hail fell during daylight hours. Knocked some people out completely, knocked some people off of bicycles. I think every single window on the Baylor University campus was broken. What destruction!

THE HAILSTONE MEASURED 6.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH A CIRCUMFERENCE OF 17.3 INCHES. Interesting - I hought they would have been more or less round (spherical).
But a sphere of D = 6.5 should have a circumference of 20.42 inches.
However, a sphere of C = 17.3 inches would have a diameter of 5.50 inches.
Perhaps we have a typo here.

My experience with large hail was that it tended to be a bit like a donut wrapped around a ball, with perpendicular grooves along the donut part.

There was a wild summer day in Winnipeg several decades ago.
First there were too consecutive thunderstorms that overpowered the drainage system. I lived in a residential area. I happened to glance out the window and saw a guy in a canoe whopping away as he paddled down the avenue.
Several hours later, after the water had drained there was a massive hail storm. In no time at all the ground was white as Christmas.
Broken windows, many dead cats and dogs. That year new car sales all went for specials.

I don't care about the hail, I just want to know when the value for pi was changed.
