My experience with large hail was that it tended to be a bit like a donut wrapped around a ball, with perpendicular grooves along the donut part.

Correct! We had a terrible hailstorm in Hutchinson, KS back in the late 50s or early 60s where the hailstones averaged about 6" in diameter. They were shaped liked doughnuts with the hole not going all the way through.

The local paper even reported that someone had found a hailstone the size of a football.

Everyone put the darned things in their freezers for the doubting Thomases that were sure to come along later. I'll bet some people still have 'em.
