THE HAILSTONE MEASURED 6.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH A CIRCUMFERENCE OF 17.3 INCHES.

Interesting - I hought they would have been more or less round (spherical).

But a sphere of D = 6.5 should have a circumference of 20.42 inches.

However, a sphere of C = 17.3 inches would have a diameter of 5.50 inches.

Perhaps we have a typo here.

My experience with large hail was that it tended to be a bit like a donut wrapped around a ball, with perpendicular grooves along the donut part.
