The Trailer for Mel Gibson's The Passion Seen!
Comingsoon.net ^ | 6/24/03 | Rosary Guy

Scooper 'Rosary Guy' has provided Coming Soon! with early word on the trailer for Mel Gibson's The Passion, starring James Caviezel and Monica Bellucci. The production is currently targeting an April, 2004 release date though no domestic distributor is on board yet...

Jim Caviezel was in Atlanta this past Saturday for the 2003 Eucharistic Congress sponsored by the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Both he and his wife Kerri gave outstanding talks to the 15,000+ people in attendance. Twice that day they screened the preview trailer for "The Passion," the Mel Gibson-directed movie starring Caviezel as Jesus Christ.

Despite my Christian enthusiasm, it was indeed a powerful trailer.

There was no English spoken in the scenes shown and the actors were all speaking Latin and Aramaic, as reported (Guess all those hypothesis that Gibson was pulling another of his infamous practical jokes was wrong). The scenes that stuck out the most was the gratuitousness of the scourging of Jesus before his Crucifixion, Mary stepping on the head of snake, and the slow motion scene of the Pharisees throwing a bag of silver clear across a room to Judas Iscariot, who has trouble catching it and coins spill all over the floor.

They also showed many images of the Crucifixion itself, which definitely reminded me of the end of Braveheart and how much Gibson went for realism. They showed the end of a nail being placed in Jesus' palm, pushed down, and then the hammer about to strike, but stopped short of actually showing the piercing. I won't be surprised at all, though, if they do show that in the movie.

As I said, it looks really, really powerful. Now that I've seen the trailer, I'm in complete agreement that subtitles are unnecessary.

There was no release date set but I believe I heard or read it was 8 months away, though the trailer looked like it was mostly complete.

St. Joseph media recorded Caviezel's talk, but I don't know if/when they'll be selling tapes of it. They sold out during the Congress.

I know you've made some mentions of The Passion before, so I thought this might be of interest. It is definitely my next "must see" movie after seeing the preview.

...Mary stepping on the head of snake....

Huh?

And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel."
(Genesis 3:15)

Dan

Synopsis:

Her mother died when she was four years old; her surrogate mother abandoned her a few years later, plunging Thérèse Martin (Lindsay Younce) into a mental collapse.

Then something miraculous happens.

At the age of 14 she undergoes a mysterious conversion and falls deeply in love with God. Then - not old enough for the convent -- she goes all the way to the Vatican, where she boldly steps forth at a papal audience to beg for permission to become a Carmelite nun.

In the monastery, Therese, a teenage girl, gains insights that breathe fresh air into the Catholic Church and transform the world. Challenged by the austere, cloistered life, this pampered child discovers a simple way of loving God.

In a lavish period production, comparable to Merchant Ivory's "A Room with a View," THERESE tells the true story of Thérèse of Lisieux, the most popular saint of modern times. It's a story of struggle and tragedy, and the greatest of all romances -The story of an ordinary girl with an extraordinary soul.

Directed by Leonardo Defilippis.

"he" is Eve's progeny,
and Mary is the second Eve (both Eve and Mary were created without original sin), thus Mary's progeny crushed the serpent's head

From the web elsewhere:

Genesis 3:14-16 contains the words of God condemning the serpent for leading Eve and Adam into sin. There God pronounces he will “put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers. He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.”

Chapter 12 of Revelation speaks of the woman clothed with the sun whose son the dragon seeks to devour. In both instances the serpent or snake represents the devil and evil. Both passages are applied to Mary as the woman whose offspring will conquer Satan.

Here you go.
Please explain why Mary would be depicted as cruching the serpent's head, etc.

Well, if for any other reason than good story telling it makes good sense that

where Adam and Eve were given a clean slate and blew it for all of us (with the siless woman leading the sinless man into sin),

the "new Adam" was eternally a clean slate and the "new Eve" was given a clean slate and she cooperated with him in redeeming what was lost (with the sinless Man leading the sinless woman to maintain her virtue).

Sorry...the Bible nowhere says Mary was sinless.

I believe the Bible...your story about Mary being sinless is not in the Bible.

we even have the symbolism of Eve (the one originally attracted to sin) coming from Adam's side,

and later the new Adam (the one who is the Redeemer) coming from Eve's side

its all so wonderful - perfect even - as though God wrote it...

Again...nice allegory; however Mary is not God so not perfect.

Mary's sinlessness is not in the Bible as you claim.

Where is it written that Mary was created without original sin? I think that is a pretty bold liberty you take with biblical text! In fact, it would stand to reason that Mary has to be sinful, otherwise the true nature of Jesus the Christ cannot be very man and very God.

Please point to where it says that Mary sinned? In fact, we have in the bible no record of her sinning.

On the contrary, the bible tells us Much about Mary being in union with Christ and with knowledge about her having been already been saved by Christ prior to his even being born (her famous lines while pregnant: "My sould proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exalts in God my Savior...") which in effect made her the first to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ with this very soliloquy.

You reduce her to just another gal far too non-chalantly, given the blessings and the special honors that God himself had bestowed uopn her.

By a miracle of God, Mary was given the knowledge of the ETERNAL salvific act of Jesus - his crucifixion and resurrection.

Salvation obtained by Jesus was simply applied to Mary at an unusual time. God is not limited by our own limited sense of time - man generally understands eternal things in temporal terms, but with Mary He chose to make an exception.

This in no way diminishes the salvation Jesus gained for Mary.
