[history]
June 26, 2003 -- THE June 14 deadline for Iraqi citizens to turn in banned weapons worked about as poorly as any gun buy-back program in the United States. After the two-week program ended, a guard at one of the designated places to turn in guns said, "We have had plenty of reporters, but no weapons come in."

For whatever reason, "liberals" have a very difficult time understanding this.

We weren't disarming the Iraqis. I'm sorry the honorable Mr. Lott didn't check the facts before falling for the lying leftist press accounts of the buy back program. Small arms O.K., RPGs NOT O.K.. Our enemies provided the Iraqi people with mountains of weapons to use against us - filling hospitals and schools across Iraq.
Our troops KNOW the Iraqi people need to protect themselves from the local bad guys - they know far more about what Saddam did to these people than OUR press is sharing with the American people.

Dear Ragtime Cowgirl
I suggest that you actually read the entire piece because Lott makes it very clear that the press gave the wrong impression about what was covered and that AK47s and under were being allowed.

Last time I checked, car bombs were not on the list of legal weapons...

Shouldn't this be in breaking news?
