A west Houston man preparing to leave on a fishing trip was wounded in a gunfight that killed an unidentified assailant, police said.

Marco Antonio Carillo, 21, was in good condition at Ben Taub Hospital on Wednesday after he was shot behind his home in the 5100 block of Eigel near Reinerman about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday.

"He stepped outside to put some equipment in his truck and noticed a suspicious vehicle circling the neighborhood," said homicide Detective Kevin Carr.

An man dressed in black, who may have been riding in the suspicious Jeep Cherokee, attacked Carillo as he was about to latch his back gate. Carillo was shot in the leg and fell but shot the assailant several times, police said. The Jeep was not found at the scene.

Glad to see that this guy was armed and ready. Must have been a good shot to take out the thug after being wounded.

It sounds like the victim was carrying. Too bad for the assailant!

Yeah. The thought also crosses my mind that the assailant might have been hired to hit this guy rather than randomly cruising for an easy score.

If the bad guy had been a little less lucky with his aim, Mr. Carillo might have gone hunting and fishing in the same day.

I leave for work at 0300. my dogs see me to the back gate, and my P239 and E2E see me to the truck. most suburban dwellers would be surprised what lurks in their comfy seeming neighborhood at 0:dark-thirty.

...and the freeway at that time is a whole nuther thing.
