Mandela again slams US for Iraq war

Friday June 27, 2003 14:53 - (SA)

Former president Nelson Mandela once again condemned the United States for the war on Iraq saying "anybody, especially a leader of a super state country to work outside the United Nations, must be condemned".

Addressing media in Johannesburg after meeting with the French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin, Mandela said there had not been any world wars since the establishment of UN because the body promoted peace throughout the world.

He said he was happy with French President Jacques Chirac's attitude towards the Iraqi war.

"Chirac took the correct attitude not to support the war. He is in favour of peace."

When asked whether he would tell US President George W Bush about his stand on the Iraqi war when he visited South Africa next month, Mandela replied: "Do not assume that he will meet with me - I know he is coming to see President Thabo Mbeki but I am not sure if he wants to see me".

"I have said what I wanted to say about the war and I will not repeat myself," Mandela said.

De Villepin said he was pleased to have met Mandela as it was very important.

"We admire what Mandela has done for his country and the world."

He said the two discussed the economic and conflict problems in Africa. France supported the mediation efforts by South Africa to bring peace on the continent.

"We support (the) New Partnership for Africa's Development and any projects that will help to revive the continent's economy.

"We are ready to work with Africa on any projects," he said.

De Villepin leaves South Africa on Friday afternoon.

What mediation efforts? South Africa turns a blind eye and says that they cannot get involved. They will follow the steps of Zimbabwe, if they are not careful. Revolution can turn into opposition, if all you have to offer the people of your nation is the ability to rest on their laurels and say, "We are free." Freedom involves living life, not living in the victories of the past.

Mandela has no business slamming the US while his minions are raping babies. He should attend to the business of ending that.

Famine, tyranny, tribal massacres, genocide, aids epidemic, communism; well I suppose Mandela has to find some way of deflecting attention from the pathetic state of his owsn continent. I suppose next we will be hearing Castro's condemnation of the US war in the middle east.
