Beach Boys aid Edwards
News and Observer ^ | June 27, 2003 | JOHN WAGNER

Posted on 06/27/2003 7:46:43 AM PDT by mykdsmom

On Monday, U.S. Sen. John Edwards will be surrounded by California girls. He's likely to be feeling good vibrations and having fun, fun, fun. And he may ask himself: Wouldn't it be nice to be president of the United States?

This is all possible because the Beach Boys are scheduled to provide entertainment for the North Carolina Democrat at a backyard fund-raiser in Los Angeles.

The gathering falls on the final day of the second quarter of presidential fund raising.

Edwards led the nine-member Democratic pack during the first quarter of the year, raking in $7.4 million for his White House campaign.

He is expected to be among the more successful in the second quarter, though aides have been tamping down expectations in recent days. Second-quarter estimates are expected to trickle out from campaigns next week, though the hopefuls are not required to detail their donors and expenditures until July 15.

Meet me later

Ever since Edwards' May 2002 appearance on "Meet the Press," there has been no shortage of speculation in Washington as to when he might return.

Edwards' performance, which included some vague responses, was panned by pundits, and Edwards even poked fun at the experience when he addressed the annual Gridiron dinner in Washington earlier this year.

The question has been renewed in the wake of last weekend's appearance by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, a rival for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination. In the eyes of many political observers, Dean got roughed up pretty badly by host Tim Russert.

Edwards, in any case, is not likely to reappear anytime soon.

Betsy Fischer, the show's executive producer, said NBC has been trying for months to get Edwards back on.

"He has an open invitation, but we have not been able to nail anything down," she said, adding that Russert has even made personal pleas to get Edwards on again. "They know of our interest," she said.

Edwards spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri said that doing the Sunday morning show simply isn't a priority at this point in the campaign -- but left open the possibility of appearing later.

"Some political observers in Washington may pay attention to who does what show," Palmieri said. "But voters don't care."

2001 Presidential Inauguration: Texas State Society Black Tie & Boots Inaugural Ball 2001

This time they planned to have something to really celebrate so they booked big-name entertainers: Black and his wife, Lisa Hartman Black, George Strait, Tanya Tucker, Greenwood and Asleep at the Wheel. They stocked the sports bar with Aikman, Roger Staubach, Ben Crenshaw and Mia Hamm. The ball grew so large that a San Antonio-themed festival was added to the day's proceedings, plus the Beach Boys, plus a fighter jet.

"Edwards led the nine-member Democratic pack during the first quarter of the year, raking in $7.4 million for his White House campaign."

Almost all of it trial lawyer money.

"Some political observers in Washington may pay attention to who does what show," Palmieri said. "But voters don't care."

Uh huh. Good try Jennifer. Spoken like the Edwards sycophant you are.

Mike Love has licensed the Beach Boys' name for his tour, which also features Bruce Johnston. Supporting performers include Adrian Baker, John Cowsill, Tim Bonhomme, Chris Farmer, Scott Totten, and Mike Kowalski.

Yeah, The BEACH BOYS are basically dead. Dennis left a LONG time ago. Carl died a couple years back. Brians been in LALA land since the 70's. Al and Mike were suing each other.

I don't count Bruce Johnson, although he really did a great job taking over for Brian. Don't even think about that guy who played drums and was on that horrid TV show.

I saw the BB5+ in concert a couple of years before BRian died. They were on tour with the Moody Blues. It was a pretty good concert but WAY overproduced.

Pretty sad really.

Nothing any of what's left of the band does politically wouLd surprise me

In 2000 Hand and Dean played a FREE concert to open a busway about a mile from my house. Only a few hundred fans turned out but it was a GREAT concert! My son and I even got back stage at the outdoor venue before the concert, J&D noticied my Hawaiian shirt and invited us to hang with them for a while. Now THAT WAS WAY COOL!

Good Lord I've been awake TOO long. Of course I meant CARL even though Brians seemed brain dead for so long.

They should come up with some new lyrics for Edwards:

And she'll have fun fun fun
'Til the TRIAL LAWYER takes the T-Bird away

Damn, I'm going to see the fake BB's Sunday - glad I got to see them several times with Carl and Al Jardine. Mike Love is a tool, but I've got a lot of respect for Bruce Johnston. Is John Cowsill one of the Cowsills? One of my fave guilty pleasures - "Indian Lake" really rocks!

Of course, to be P.C. I should call it "Native American Lake"...
