[history]
In last week's column, I asked readers for ideas on how to get George Bush and his merry nation-wrecking crew out of the White House. The readers responded. I got almost 700 e-mails; about one in four offered a suggestion or two.

"Our best shot is to work like whirlwinds to restore democracy our republic in 2004. No pouting if your favorite candidate doesn't get the Democratic Republican nomination. No voting in the final election for a splinter candidate who can't possibly beat the Bush machine a Democrat. No despairing retreat under the banner of 'the Democrats are no different than the Republicans.' "We can work to affect the party's policies through the primaries, but once the Democrats' Republican's candidate is chosen, that's it -- we survive as a small 'd' democracy 'r' republic by making sure he -- and the majority of Democrats Republicans running for the House and Senate -- win."
Take notes "conservatives".

Since you don't want Bush to be re-elected, perhaps you should join these guys. Just an idea. :-)

The smiley should have alerted you. LOL
Still and all, since you are actively working, here, to condemn and rebuff Bush, you actually ARE working hand in glove with the likes of the author of this piece and his allies.;^)

Just a heads up to any of you thinking of clicking the link for that "plubius" blog... don't waste your time. Mindless drivel.

You're going to have to explain that one to me. I'm working to condemn and rebuff Bush? You're the first one that's ever accused me of that. lol.
I may not get back here until tomorrow. I'm nodding off now. goodnight. (I hope I don't have nightmares now because of your suggestion! Thanks a lot! :) )

Well, says one reader, at least one modern Tom Paine already exists. He calls himself Plubius, and his blog appears at plubius.blogspot.com. If you go to it, be prepared to settle in for some thoughtful reading.
The American People face today a great menace. It is as great as that faced by Athenians Millennia ago. Yet in this case it is not an external threat to our Democracy. Plubius is disturbed by this force which now darkens the horizon. This is a force that has poisoned the waters of our Democracy and has seeded hate and mistrust across the land. In short my dear reader we have been betrayed.
general_re hates pretentious wankers who refer to themselves in the third person while simultaneously demonstrating a complete failure to grasp the function and usage of the comma. general_re is further concerned that "Plubius" is an illiterate attempt at the nom de plume "Publius" by our latter-day Tom Paine...

Just a heads up to any of you thinking of clicking the link for that "plubius" blog... don't waste your time. Mindless drivel. Oh, you are soooooooooo wrong, my friend. Where else are you going to learn that Cotton Mather (born: 1663) was a passenger on the voyage of the Mayflower (arrived at Plymouth Harbor: November, 1620)? How else will you know that a lack of moral certitude will come back to "hunt" you?
We are warned that a lack of moral certitude will come back and hunt us. Indeed some of the most dramatic declarations during those dark days of September 11th involved much of a Biblical God exacting revenge on the People of Israel. I could almost hear Cotton Mather in the distance of history on the deck of the Mayflower.
