California Assembly committee approves bill on party-line vote

California's Assembly Transportation Committee approved a bill yesterday that would allow the state to issue driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

In a party-line vote of 11-5, Democrats passed the bill over GOP opposition.

"It isn't right to give a person who is here illegally a legal identifying document," said Republican Assemblyman Tim Leslie, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Those two notions are in complete conflict."

Democratic Sen. Gil Cedillo claims his bill, SB 60, would make the state's roads safer since now, about 2 million illegals routinely drive without proper training, testing or car insurance.

According to the Times report, Cedillo also mentioned the licensing of illegal aliens would help law enforcement keep track of drivers in criminal cases because their photos, thumbprints and addresses would be recorded.

The bill now goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee before being considered on the Assembly floor.

As WorldNetDaily reported, lawmakers on the federal level are debating the wisdom of foreign embassies issuing identification cards to illegal aliens in the U.S. Mexican consulates issue matricula consular cards that then are used by illegals as ID to open bank accounts and for other purposes.

Critics of the cards see many pitfalls, including national-security risks.

"I don't see any issue that is potentially as dangerous to our sovereignty and provides tremendous opportunity for terrorism in this country than this form of documentation,'' said Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., at a recent congressional hearing.

California - a nice place to visit but I wish I didn't live here. This is a done deal - illegals will be given drivers licenses. Another gaping divot in CA's once beautiful facade.

Time for the Department of Homeland Security to wise up and get ahead of this and other border security issues. If you haven't read Invasion by Michele Malkin, I highly recommend it.

Yep, all the really serious criminals who are also illegal aliens will for sure sign up and be fingerprinted and photographed, just to make it easier to be caught should they ever rob a liquor store (again.)

I understand the point about the illegals driving without insurance & training. But rather than giving them such, DEPORT THEM! Sheesh, what IS it about liberals? Their brains just don't function...

I am utterly ashamed that my state of Tennessee has helped set a precedent that the tax-payers of California will regret. It takes a brand of "Leach-B-Gone" far stronger than methods so far deployed to shore up the drain here (every area cut 10% with kisses & promises for the booboos).
What's up with the Davis recall movement? I keep hearing noise but no news.

I have a simple solution to this. If they are not here legally, kick their asses out. End of problem.

I don't mean to say bad things about your home, but California is not a nice place to visit. My job requires me to spend a day in California, every week to ten days, I hate it more every time I go, I have do disarm myself to go where I am more likely to need to be armed to defend myself.

Sorry, This one is NOT just liberals. It seems that there is just a national "conspiracy" if you will, between the desires of the MAJORITY of American citizens and politicians of almost every stripe and state. Personally, I becoming increasingly agitated, annoyed, depressed and angry at the escalating moves made to legitimize ILLEGALS.

Case in point: Over the weekend I am looking at the main advertisement for the "American" burger at a drive-through....and realize that it is in Spanish. Now this is the introductory ad (the ONLY one) for a new product in a DRIVE through...in TN no less, and it is in Spanish. Last I looked, the majority of customers should be reading ads in English....

Next, I am confronted by a request to select my language preference at my ATM, and English is NOT the first choice.... then I open the latest Kroger flyer to find sales in bilingual ads..... in other words, this is a "done deal." and if this is the case, then our nation is done. Period.

From this page comes the Email addresses for the Transportation Committee

Note that that includes both those who voted for and those who voted against. These three don't have email addresses apparently:

More importantly, here are the emails for the Appropriations Committee, where this bill is headed next: send them email.

These four members of the App. Committee don't have email addresses listed:

Please contact these people and let them know what you think, even if you're outside California.

One thing you might ask them is to explain what Gil Cedillo meant when he offered one of the reasons for this bill: "they were here first." See my discussion of that statement here.

Apropos of the last post, this is a pretty good letter to Cedillo: http://www.americanpatrol.com/CALIFORNIA/LEGISLATION/AMNESTY/CedilloAJR51_LTR_000430MS.html

"...I've read about your shabby efforts to allow illegals to possess California driver's licenses, and how you've bragged, "We move the union movement deep into the Latino community. We have displaced other work communities -- clothing, hotel and restaurant industries used to be done by Blacks and Anglos. Now we need to organize to be in a position to lead this country! Because of immigration and the birth rate, our population is growing -- Latinos are all over this nation!". It's clear that although you're an American citizen, your true objective is flood this land with every possible warm body with ties to the Atzlan Divide, and increase both their clout and your personal clout. Not very enlightened, virtuous, straight-forward, or patriotic, but nevertheless an effective use of the Truth & Guilt dagger. We've learned from your ilk that truth is no defense when the charge is Ethnic Insensitivity. In fact, the more truth you tell, the more unspeakable your guilt. The reverse is also true which explains all this wampum, "they were here first"..."

There was an article in the L.A. Times yesterday (Panel OKs Driver's License Bill) and the last paragraph read:

Cedillo said he also found it to be the height of irony that illegal immigrants who served in the U.S. armed forces could legally operate military fighting vehicles in the war with Iraq, "but they can't drive a car in California."

Of course, the fact that illegal aliens cannot enlist in the military was never corrected by the Times.
