Gephardt, Dean, Kerry Top Iowa Poll Gephardt, Dean, Kerry at the Top in Iowa Poll; Willie Nelson Sings Kucinich's Tune

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON July 2 — Democratic presidential candidates Dick Gephardt, Howard Dean and John Kerry were bunched at the top of a poll of the most likely voters in January's Iowa caucuses.

The poll, conducted for Planned Parenthood, showed Gephardt at 21 percent; the Missouri congressman won the Iowa caucuses in his unsuccessful 1988 White House bid. Dean, the former Vermont governor, was at 20 percent, and Massachusetts Sen. Kerry 18 percent.

The poll, released Wednesday, surveyed participants in the 2000 Iowa caucuses. Democratic pollster Paul Harstad has conducted surveys for Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack.

Gephardt has led in other Iowa polls with Kerry in striking distance. Dean, who surprised many by raising $7.5 million in the second quarter of fund raising, has moved up among the leaders.

When Harstad surveyed voters who participated in the caucuses during the last two decades, Gephardt held a slight lead over Dean and Kerry. When focused on those most likely to take part next year, "the Iowa caucus is a virtual dead heat among Gephardt, Dean and Kerry," Harstad said.

Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut was at 11 percent; the remaining candidates were in single digits.

The poll of 611 caucus voters was conducted June 16-24, before the recent fund-raising numbers, and had an error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The subgroup of 328 who participated in the 2000 caucuses had an error margin of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Country music singer Willie Nelson will be on the road again this time holding concerts to help raise money for Democrat Dennis Kucinich's presidential bid.

Nelson announced Wednesday that he was endorsing Kucinich, saying the Ohio congressman has a history of standing up for heartland Americans who are overlooked and rarely heard.

"A Kucinich administration will put the interests of America's family farmers, consumers and environment above the greed of industrial agribusiness," Nelson said. "I will be doing all I can to raise his profile with voters."

Kucinich faces eight Democrats in the presidential primary.

Willie doesn't remember that it was the Demo inspired taxes that cost him his farm. Or, just maybe, he wants to be on the side of the thieves, so he can get his.

Dennis, while staying at Willies ranch house, came out of the shower nude with a joint dangling from his mouth.

Next thing he knew, Willie had his lips pursed to Dennis' member thinking he was a bong.

Willie Nelson is a wonderful musician who as an American is entitled to support whomever he chooses to support for president ... but at the end of the day, just like the Dixie Chicks, Striesand, etc., he's still just a musician. And the only reason I put a musician on the CD player is to be entertained ... their relevance on the political stage IMHO is pretty much in their own minds.

No need to apologize. I know some boys in Hillsboro that will be very interested in hearing this, though.

BTW, I didn't get my screen name from *them*.;o)

At the last Willie Nelson concert I attended, most of the people walked out because he was so stoned that he couldn't remember the lyrics to his songs. Nelson is a pathetic has-been and a sorry POS.

I heard that Willie has people around him 24 hours a day called "rollers." They just sit there and roll his dope for him all day long.
