Has Mr. Mandela visited a Civil War Union veterans' cemetary yet to express appreciation for the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands in the war against slavery?----NOPE.

Why should he? The War had nothing to do with slavery

These same mouthy negroes have not thanked my family for my great-grandfather fighting to free slaves. No negroes have thank us, ever.

Rude. Didn't their families bring 'em right right? Or just left?

Absolutely no apology. If only for the reason that neither nations nor individuals can be responsible in any way for actions that neither has undertaken nor endorsed, whether in the present or the past. Tell these race hucksters to take a hike, Mr. President.

The farther away Jamaica gets from english colonial influence the worse it gets in some respects.

Sadly true. I am glad you made the clarification at the end. Anecdotally, there are some kids (sent to private school there) who are light years ahead of our kids when they finish their high-school equivalent in Jamaica. They came up to the US to attend college, and they do quite well. They speak the King's English and have wonderful manners. But, yes, they are the exception, not the rule. Sad, because that country could be so much more than it is. I still love it, though, and go every chance I can.

The US international SLAVE TRADE was abolished by the US Constitution ( which made it effective 20 tears after ratification --- therefore the "1808" date).

Not exactly true. The Constitution prohibited Congress from stopping the trade prior to that date, it did not itself abolish it. Congress passed a law that took effect on the first date the Constitution allowed.

Clinton Comment on Slavery Draws a Republican's Ire
By KATHARINE Q. SEELYE

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas, one of the top Republican leaders in the House, castigated President Clinton on Friday for apologizing for America's role in the slave trade, portraying the president as an aging hippie who betrayed the United States during the Vietnam War and is doing so again.

Referring to Clinton's apology, issued this week in Uganda, DeLay said: "Here's a flower child with gray hairs doing exactly what he did back in the '60s: He's apologizing for the actions of the United States. Wherever he went. It just offends me that the president of the United States is, directly or indirectly, attacking his own country in a foreign land. It just amazes me."

DeLay, who as majority whip has made no secret of his animus for the president, was quick to say that he did not approve of the slave trade himself.

I was in Jamaica when they were granted independence. At the time it was a very nice and friendly place.

What is your source for the statement that we ended the international slave trade in 1808? Where did the next 50 years worth of slaves come from?

Didn't Clinton already run around Africa apologizing for slavery to anyone who would listen?
