Posted on 07/03/2003 12:03:52 AM PDT by DoctorZIn

In just 6 days (July 9th) the people of Iran are planning massive demonstrations events and strikes.

On this date, 4 years ago, the regime brutally attacked peaceful student demonstrators while in their dorms. The result was the loss of life and liberty of hundreds of students, many of which are still unaccounted for.

Once again, the regime has been threatening a major crackdown on the protesters. A major confrontation is just days away.

Iran is a country ready for a regime change. If you follow this thread you will witness, I believe, the transformation of a country. This daily thread provides a central place where those interested in the events in Iran can find the best news and commentary.

Please continue to post your news stories and comments to this thread.

Thanks for all the help.

SMCCDI: Famous American Strategist Calls for Support of Iranian Students

SMCCDI (Information Service)
July 2, 2003

One of the most famous American analysts called, yesterday, for the increase of official US support of the Iranian Student Movement and the Secularist forces who are seeking to overthrown the Islamic republic regime.

Dr. Jack Wheeler, the mastermind behind the famous
"Reagan Doctrine", who was speaking in a public forum in Dallas (TX/USA), stated: "More than ever we shall adjust our policy and bring an open and firm support to the brave students and freedom fighters who are fighting against a barbarian and terrorist regime".

"Without doubt, these young Iranians who are forming more than 70% of the Iran's population are our best friends for years to come and they're our natural allies against fanatism and terrorism" he emphasized.

Dr. Wheeler slammed those "Opportunistic European Countries" who are blinded by the money made on the back of the oppressed people of the World and predicted a soon end to their colonial rules.

Following Dr. Wheeler's description of the current geopolicy, Aryo Pirouznia, speaking on behalf of SMCCDI, asked from the audience for an increase of the moral support for Iranian freedom fighters.

Pirouznia stated:" Your moral support and pressure against those countries dealing with my Motherland is an important step in the Iranian Freedom process. Such help is less costly than any type of military war which will dammage my country and undermines the increasing US popularity among the majority of the Iranians."

"Help us to determine our future by ourselves. Just support us moraly and we will overcome of a shacky regime" he emphasized.

Jack Wheeler who's a Geopolitic expert and a maverick explorer is well known for his role in support of the non-marxist freedom movements across the globe and his role in the dismantelment of the defunct Soviet Empire.

He's the author of several books and is managing an online news service named "Tothepointnews.com"

Thank you for the ping. While I haven't been posting to all the threads I have been watching what is going on.

God Bless those who have the bravery to love liberty and oppose tyranny. God is not a tyrant and has always brought about the destruction of those who were. I firmly believe He will not tolerate the innocent blood on these oppressers hands.

Good Morning from the GoE.

A few weeks ago, I suggested the idea of going to a specific website to show our support towards the brave people of Iran on July 9th. i know you have had an awful lot going on, but has there been any progress on that idea, as I want to play my part on that historical day. I have already signed two petitions, on the Students Movement's website and an separate petition to Mr Annan at the Dis-United Nations.

Any suggestions into where the best place to be to protest on July 9th on the Web???

Keep Believing

Iran holds over 300 - Most Saudis, Kuwaitis

A majority of the over 300 al-Qaeda members being held in Iran are Kuwaitis and Saudis, says an informed source. The source told Al-Anba Iran's Ministry of Security has prepared a list on the identities and names of al-Qaeda members held in its prisons. "Tehran, however, prefers, not to reveal the names and nationalities of the detainees because most of them are Kuwaitis and Saudis," he added.

"The total number of al-Qaeda members held in Iran exceeds 300. Most of them have been involved in major terror plots and attacks. We, therefore, do not wish to aggravate tension between Riyadh and Washington, in particular," said the source.

Iranian sources had earlier confirmed Iranian intelligence officials are involved in secret negotiations with Arab and international intelligence officials, including the British intelligence, to discuss the fate of al-Qaeda detainees.

The source said, meanwhile, Tehran does not wish a military or political escalation with the United States. "Iran does not also wish international nuclear weapons inspectors to commence their inspection duties in Iran without a prior agreement and on the basis of international agreements.

The source affirmed Tehran does not want to produce weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons. He added such nuclear capabilities will economically be a burden on Iran, especially when it is heavily involved in economic reforms.

The source reiterated Iran is ready to open up all of its nuclear installations to international inspectors to ensure Iran is free of any military or armament activity. He stressed international inspectors should not be granted permission to expand inspection activities without an international resolution.

Iran’s judiciary chief to visit Saudi Arabia

The head of Iran’s judiciary is to visit Saudi Arabia for talks there with top officials, a spokesman said, amid signs that Iran has detained and is seeking to extradite high-ranking members of the Al Qaeda network.

Judiciary spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham told the official IRNA news agency that Ayatollah Mahmud Hashemi-Shahrudi will begin his two-day visit to the desert kingdom on Saturday, and will discuss ”important regional issues... and a joint campaign against regional organised crime.”

“A memorandum of understanding will also be signed to promote bilateral judicial ties,” he added. But Elham did not confirm if their talks would cover the possible extradition of Saudi Al Qaeda members detained in the Islamic republic.

According to numerous diplomats, Iran is engaged in secretive and complex negotiations with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Kuwait over the extradition of several top aides to Osama bin Laden.

Iran’s foreign minister has said that Iran has no intention of publicly revealing their names.

They are in a hurry, most of the extraditions will be done before July 9th. Expect a declaration from Teheran tomorrow July 4th when they send a message to Dubya.

Iran Targets Satellite TV Owners

July 03, 2003
Middle East Online
middle-east-online.com

TEHRAN - Iranian security forces have carried out a series of raids targetting private owners of banned satellite dishes in areas of Tehran that were the scene of recent anti-regime protests, witnesses and reports said Thursday.

The official Iran newspaper said that for several days there has been "a new wave of dish seizures, particularly in districts that were the theatre of recent troubles," a reference to the June 10-20 student-led unrest.

The protests swelled after many residents of Tehran were urged to take to the streets by foreign-based opposition satellite television broadcasts.

The ownership of satellite equipment is illegal in the country, and the paper said offending households received court summons and fines ranging between one and five million rials (120 and 600 dollars).

Witnesses in one neighbourhood near Tehran University, the epicenter of the virulent protests, said many of the raids were carried out by plainclothes men who could be seen throwing dishes from rooftops.

Around a dozen opposition television stations beam Persian-language broadcasts into Iran. Most are run by sympathisers of the monarchy that was ousted in 1979.

The struggle by Iran's clerical leaders against the broadcasts also includes attempts to jam reception of the stations in the capital, where hundreds of thousands of people are believed to own dishes and receivers.

Powell: 'Keep out of Iran feud'

BBC News 7.3.2003

Iran's leaders reacted angrily to US support of the protests The US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has said America should not get involved in Iran's internal politics.

In a radio interview, he said Washington should stay away from the "family fight" between the country's reformists and conservatives.

He also reminded listeners that Iran was a democracy and President Mohammad Khatami had been freely elected.

Washington upset Iran in June when President George W Bush welcomed a wave of protests against the country's religious leadership.

President Khatami was elected... not in an American kind of election but an election that essentially tapped into the desires of the people

US Secretary of State Colin Powell

The protests have since subsided and Mr Powell said in his interview that the United States should sit back and observe further developments.

He told the Washington radio station WMAL: "The best thing we can do right now is not get in the middle of this family fight too deeply.

Deep concerns

"Remember that the president of Iran is freely elected. President Khatami was elected by his people, not in an American kind of election but an election that essentially tapped into the desires of the people."

Several thousand people took to the streets in cities across Iran to protest against the conservative clerical establishment and the reformist President Khatami, who is accused of betraying hopes for change.

At the time, President Bush described the protests as "the beginnings of people expressing themselves toward a free Iran", prompting an angry response from Iranian leaders.

Mr Powell stressed that Washington still had deep concerns about Iran, one of President Bush's "axis of evil".

But he added that it was best for the US to see if the protest movement would pressure Iran's political and religious leaders "to see whether this causes them to realise that they are going down a loser trail".

The Future of Iranian Nationalism (Great Read!)

AP [An Excerpt]

The twists and turns of domestic Iranian politics can be tracked by examining the evolution of Iranian nationalism throughout the 20th century, and how nationalism has shaped modern day Iran. Nationalism will continue to be a significant influence on Iran's social and political life, and it is important for us to understand its history and present course if we are to understand the nature of the domestic revolts that are currently threatening the survival of the Islamic regime in Iran.

Several Iranian students on hunger strike over arrests

A number of students from Tehran and provincial universities have gone on hunger strike to demand the release of classmates arrested during recent anti-regime protests, press reports said Thursday.

The reformist Nassim Saba paper said several students from Tehran's Allameh Tabatabae University had stopped eating since Monday.

They were demanding that detained demonstrators be freed and "rogue elements" of the clerical regime, namely hardline vigilante groups that helped violently quell the June 10-20 protests, be put on trial.

The conservative Afarinesh paper said eight students from Mashhad's Ferdowsi University were also making a similar protest to demand the release of detained students.

A third hunger strike has reportedly begun in the central city of Isfahan.

According to Iran's judiciary, a bastion of the religious right, some 4,000 people were detained during the demonstrations marked by unprecedented slogans targeting supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and fierce clashes between hardline Islamist groups and demonstrators.

Some 2,000 people are still in detention, a top justice official said last week, but the judiciary has said only 100 of those in detention are actually students.

The rest have been described as "hooligans".
