July 3 (Bloomberg) -- Dutch Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner asked Germany to arrest six former Schutzstaffel officers convicted of war crimes in the Netherlands and ensure they serve life-long prison terms, Agence France-Presse reported.

The Dutch-born men, now all in their eighties, were sentenced to death in their absence by Dutch courts, the news agency said. The penalty was later reduced to life-long imprisonment. All of them were members of the SS elite unit in the Netherlands during its occupation by Nazi Germany between 1940 and 1945, AFP said. After the war, they fled to Germany, which granted them German citizenship, AFP said.

How nice of them, giving war criminals a place to stay.

What's next? Will they give Saddam German citizenship too?

BTW, mr. Berlusconi, here are some nazi's for you, protected by the German state. Maybe Schultz could explaint it all.

Keep in mind the Netherlands are being run by a conservative party now (as an aftershock of the Fortuyn assassination), so... how can I put this? It might not be a complete coincidence that they are asking the German gov't to do this at this specific time.

Well, more or less conservative. More center-right.

The whole affair started rolling after a team of journalists tracked them down, proving they were still alive. The government at the time (socialists/liberals) didn't really put pressure on the Germans, sparking outrage. I guess the new government wants to show people they are really wanting to make changes.

Have the Dutch done this to exhonerate Berlusconi and embarass Germany on the heels of his off-hand remark?
