COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Convicted child killer Susan Smith has placed an online personal ad from behind bars that seeks pen pals with a list of loves including Mickey Mouse, rainbows, mountains and waterfalls.
"I hope to receive letters from those who are not judgmental and who are sincere," reads the ad, accompanied by a photo of a smiling Smith wearing sweat pants boldly marked "SC Department of Corrections."
"I have grown and matured since my incarceration," she wrote, "but I will always hurt for the pain I've caused so many, especially my children."
Smith, who is serving a life sentence, became notorious in 1994 for going on national television to tearfully plead for the return of her missing sons. She later admitted to strapping 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex into their car seats and rolling the sleeping boys into Union's John D. Long Lake.
The advertisement, posted last month on Edgewater, Fla.-based writeaprisoner.com, has resulted in thousands of hits and more than 500 e-mails that have been forwarded to Smith, said spokesman Jason Roberts.
"Susan is by far our biggest celebrity inmate," he said.
Roberts said Smith took out the $40 ad, which will run for one year, and paid for it with a South Carolina Department of Corrections check.
Corrections Director Jon Ozmint confirmed Friday that the photo is of the 31-year-old Smith and that she did pay for the ad with money from her account at Leath Correctional Institute in Greenwood.
"She wired money through a check at this agency," he said.
Prisoners often have accounts for the small amount of money they earn doing jobs behind bars, as well as cash contributed by their friends and relatives, Ozmint said. He added that the money is mainly for personal items and not supposed to be used for such things as personal ads, but many inmates get someone outside the prison to pay for them.
Ozmint said inmates do not have access to the Internet but receive mail from personal ads.
"During my spare time, I enjoy reading, working puzzles and writing," Smith's ad reads. "I love rainbows, Mickey Mouse, the beach, mountains and waterfalls."
"My favorite color is navy blue and my favorite flower is the daisy. I am a Christian and I enjoy attending church. I consider myself to be sensitive, caring and kind-hearted. I'm currently serving a life sentence on the charge of murder."
The ad ends with the words: "May God bless each one of you!"
Smith's mother, Linda Russell of Union, said the ad may be a hoax.
Russell said her daughter had not mentioned the ad during their visits or in phone calls they share several nights a week. Russell also said Smith is a well-liked inmate with many friends and wouldn't be searching for more through an Internet pen-pal service.
"She probably has more friends than people walking out here free," Russell said.
Smith's personal life has made headlines before. Two prison guards were disciplined for having sex with Smith three years ago. One was sentenced to 90 days in jail, the other was put on probation.
"Hold muh beer 'n watch this!" PING....
If you want on or off this list, please let me know!
