Cognac "is a classy, sophisticated and really smooth thing to drink," says rap star Jay-Z. His new Manhattan club, 40/40, features a "Remy room" in honor of his own favorite cognac brand, Remy Martin.
Nothing new here. During the early 90s, Dr. Dre talked about getting "the chronic, the Remy Martin, and the soda pop". The clueless censors at MTV censored out "chronic" but left in "soda pop", apparently thinking it meant Pepsi instead of coke.

"In this region, you don't show your wealth if you have some, and you don't talk about money," Ms. Louvet says. She is keeping an open mind, though. "We have our values here, but we tolerate the values of others. What we want is to make a living."

The Thunderbird and NightTrain of the oh-so-evolved ghetto ganstas. LOL!! These French congac producers my decide to stop exporting to the US when they see the rappers.

Hip Hop ARTISTS ???

What is sad is that nobody had the guts to boo these people off the stage when they first started.

They should have been jeered off the stage, escorted to the exit, and placed under restraining orders.

Behind the times as ever, I had no idea Cognac had become the drink of choice of rappers. This will make it easier to continue my boycott of things French. Giving up Bordeaux was relatively painless given the California alternatives; and though much French cheese is wonderful, there's no shortage of choices to explore from Italy, England, and the U.S. But there's nothing quite like Cognac. I miss it, but I've sipped my last.

Now, as far as using Cognac in cocktails, well, that's just ordinary conspicuous consumption. I think Stoli in a Bloody Mary, or single malt in a Scotch-and-soda is a waste; so too with Cognac in a mixed drink. Cognac is nothing more than brandy with an exacting pedigree; and brandy is simply a distilled liquor made from an otherwise undistinguished white wine, rather than from barley mash (Scotch) or corn squeezin's. In fact, brandy broadly interpreted is distilled liquor made from just about any fruit (apricot brandy, apple brandy, peach brandy, etc.), but the "Cognac wanna-bes" utilize wine from grapes similar to those used in Cognac. A brandy-and-soda, using a good but not extravagent brandy, is a nice change of pace highball, but if you use Cognac, you're just showing off.
