Blair: Be proud of our Iraq role
Evening Standard (U.K.) ^ | 07/14/03

Tony Blair has declared Britain should be "proud" of its role in ousting Saddam Hussein from Iraq, as he continued to fight off questions over his decision to go to war.

The Prime Minister vented his exasperation during a press conference alongside 13 other world leaders to mark the end of the Progressive Governance Summit in Surrey.

"When we have over the past couple of days taken the first steps for Iraqi people actually to take control of their own lives and we have the United Nations talking about 300,000 people and mass graves, then I believe we should be proud that Saddam has gone, glad that he has gone," he said.

"I have no doubt at all that in the future, whatever the differences have been in the past, we can reconstruct Iraq as a stable and prosperous country and the world will be a more secure place as a result. We should be proud as a country of what we have done."

Earlier, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said that the Government still stood by a claim that had Iraq tried to buy uranium ore for its nuclear programme from the west African state of Niger.

The Government has been under pressure over the claim since the International Atomic Energy Agency disclosed that documents which it received relating to the allegation were crude forgeries.

Last week the White House said that a reference to the claim - which was passed to the Americans by MI6 - should not have been included in President George Bush's State of the Union address.

However, Mr Straw said that Britain had not been able to reveal the source of the intelligence to the US as it was passed to Britain from a third, unnamed intelligence service.

Mr Straw cited the discovery following the fall of Baghdad of centrifuge parts used in uranium enrichment together with technical documentation buried at the home of an Iraqi nuclear scientist, as evidence of Iraq's continuing nuclear programme.

"People don't bury technical documents, still less parts of centrifuges unless they have a purpose in doing so and it is difficult to believe there was a purpose in doing so except that the preparations were being made for further development of a nuclear programme," he said.

Tony, Tony, Tony. You've made common cause with Marxists and Socialists and driven the British people further and further from their liberties. Why are you suprised and dismayed that now your mates will devour you alive in true Stalinist fashion?
