A black bear mauled two campers at Rocky Mountain National Park over the weekend, leaving them with torn scalps and forcing rangers to shut down a number of backcountry camping sites.
Patrick Finan, 22, of Boulder and Tim Schuett, 23, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., were attacked as they slept in separate tents early Sunday, park officials said.
Finan was bitten in the forehead and scalp before the bear let go.
"My reaction was basically, to first to scream to warn everyone else in the campsite and try to scare the bear off," Finan told The Associated Press. "Then to stop the blood from flowing. It was flowing pretty fast."
Schuett, who was awakened by the screams of his colleague, was scratched on the head through the fabric of the tent. The bear walked off when the campers yelled.
Finan said he suffered three puncture wounds that required stitches. He is also on a regimen of antibiotics to ensure there is no infection.
The attack happened at a Fern Lake backcountry campsite, and park rangers shut down other sites in the Odessa Gorge area of the park to search for the bear.
"This is a serious incident," chief ranger Joe Evans said. "All proper food storage was used in this campsite and the bear still acted aggressively."
The last fatality in the park from a black bear attack was in 1971.
Your in their house.

High country, nothing! They're here in Ohio (and west Virginia and Pennsylvania). In a small (pop. 35,000) town near here (Ohio Valley area) a nice sized black bear was found roaming on the downtown public library lawn. I live in the middle of a deep forest, but have big dogs, and haven't seen any sign of the critters...yet.
Black Bear Stew
4 to 5 lbs bear meat cut in 1 inch cubes
1/4 cup flour
1 tbs italian seasoning
4 tbs butter
2 tbs vegetable or corn oil
1 large onion diced
1 8 oz. tin beef broth
4 bay leaves (do not eat!!)
2 lb small. potatoes
1 lb fresh mushrooms if button size do not slice
5 carrots sliced
1 turnip cubed
5 parsnip sliced (optional)
Preheat oven to 325 Deg.. put flour with seasonings in plastic bag and shake until bear meat coated, combine oil and butter in skillet and brown meat and drain off grease from meat. In a large dutch oven add 2 or 3 qts. of water and all ingredients. Cook approx. 2 to 3 hours adding water if necessary checking every 30 minutes. Serve with fresh rolls or italian bread.
Looks kike you haven't read this current FR thread yet.
I seems the National Park Service has an Agency regulation (not law) that prohibits even CCW-licensed citizens from carrying weapons on any National Parks land...
