CHICAGO, July 16 (UPI) -- The Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil faces a lawsuit for firing a performer who tested positive for HIV.

U.S. gymnast Matthew Cusick alleges he was fired from Cirque du Soleil's Las Vegas show "Mystere" for being HIV-positive and has filed a federal discrimination complaint against the circus.

"I told them I was HIV-positive at the very start of my four months of training in Montreal," Cusick told the Chicago Tribune from his home in Maryland.

Cusick, 31, said a circus doctor had declared him in good health at that time. Cusick attorney Hayley Gorenberg said her client has been HIV-positive for 10 years.

Shortly after being offered a job as a "catcher" of aerialists in "Mystere," Cusick said, he was told by a Cirque representative he was being fired as a result of being HIV-positive.

Um...good?

Why do I find myself seriously doubting that they hired him with full knowledge of his disease then turned around and fired him for it?

He was a "catcher" before this job as well.

What was there that this guy did not know about AIDS 20 years ago that would have prevented his getting it 10 years ago? I don't understand it.

. . .agree. . .or perhaps the rest of the 'cirque cast' did not know. . .found out and did care. . .

. . .some 'gloss on' here somewhere.

If they spent four months training him somebody must have screwed up. Either he didn't report his AIDS up front or someone failed to notice it until too late.

Or no-one told the other performers, they somehow found out and made a big enough stink to get the guy fired.
