It doesn't make up for Fox's doom and gloom herd mentality for the past month (and the fact that they really don't go looking for any positive stories) but it does indicate that viewers' complaints (and maybe a fall in viewership) is having some impact.

At best Fox is "fair and balanced", meaning no more conservative than liberal. But in fact if you take the standard of what is the best prediction of what will seem important in a hundred years from now, almost nothing "liberal" is likely to make muster. And if that's the situation with Fox, what is the situation with CBS!

Having said that, Bush brought it all on upon himself. Not by stating it in the speech, mind you, but by issuing a correction, and admitting it was a mistake. He essentially handed his opponents an issue. It's quite rare, and often a bit refreshing, when an elected official shows some humility and admits a mistake. But in this case, the mistake was admitting the mistake. There was nothing wrong with having it in the speech. Why did he do it? He's got plenty of whopper-sized mistakes he could admit to: CFR, education, inaction and reaction to SCOTUS decision on affirmative action, just to name a few. But no. They can't even get that right. Having witnessed all of these partisan reactions, who can blame politicians for not being contrite and never, never, ever admitting to a goof.

No kidding! RAT George Tenet was the worst offender. Is there any possiblity he did this whole admission thing ... on his own (perhaps with encouragement from his old boss) ... without the Prez and his Brain Trust signing off? And once having done so, they are uncertain how to deal with him, so wedded to their bi-partisanship insanity as they are?

I am convinced that Hillary will be running in '04 now for sure, and that it was primarily due to this huge political blunder by GWB and his inner circle. He could have FIRED Tenet promptly. Showed some guts. I can't imagine that this crowd did it deliberately, as I sure don't think they would want to be up against the Clinton's head-on again. Even Limbaugh is making noises now reversing his prognostications, admitting the possibility of Hillary in '04.

I only hear Limbaugh in small bits and pieces, I know he recently called the W Presidency "Nixonian" not Reaganesque.

Reason Magazine or (Human Events?) gave Nixon demerits for his growth of Big Government including such gems as the EPA.

I don't think Conservatives will "get it" until they see the concertina wire and smell the cordite.

Hi, MM! I'm still a common lurker but not posting much lately - not as much time to do this as I might have. Though it has been a couple weeks since you posted to this thread, I just read it. I would like to second your comment to Coper. You said, "I guess you think that printing your opinion in italics and bold makes it more important. Au contraire..." and continued by talking about your dad and mom and "nucular". The funny part about these "enhancements" to regular text is that I find I totally skip over items written in italics and other "funny" text, and never read them. The long and short of it is that by attempting to draw attention to themselves, people who overuse such devices are simply marginalizing whatever impact their words might have had otherwise. I still don't know what Coper wrote ... but I assume from your comment he was Bush bashing.

The history I have read on the US conquest of the Philippines was about 220,000 Filipino men, women and children dead (Wall Street Journal, "Death Toll," Nov. 19, 1997, P. 1.

About 4,000 Americans dead. It was pretty much a slaughter.

Comparing Iraq to Germany and Japan... both the latter nations ended war with official agreements, or treaties. There was an official war declared by Congress, and an official end to it. What followed afterwards was, in my opinion, a different kind of aftermath than in Iraq.

In Iraq, there is no truce. As of today, there isn't even a recognized government that I know of. Who can represent Iraq? Who can say who can represent Iraq?

The Army didn't surrender. The government didn't surrender. It was like the Soviet's going into Eastern European countries and just asserting their power. Not the same, of course, but we've invaded a country and told them they'll set up a government we approve of. Man, that is really taking liberties ... to use the word.

It's a strange situation. We're making the best of it.
