EU to discuss world ban on death penalty
EU Observer ^ | 7/21/3

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – Europe’s foreign ministers will meet today (Monday 21 July) in Brussels to decide on tabling a resolution to the United Nations General Assembly banning the death penalty.

An attempt in 1999 to pass such a vote failed, with some UN members arguing that the move was excluded under rules protecting internal state decisions.

The EU, at the time led by Finland, called on all UN members to progressively limit offences with can be punishable by death – with the final aim of abolition.

The next General Assembly is in September.

If the EU is so worried about the death penalty, how does it explain Srebrenica? Thousands of men, women, and children were sentenced to death for being part of the wrong ethnic group. And the Dutch collaborators stood by and let it happen.

If the UN wants to outlaw it, conversely it must be a good thing. I've always wondered, and now I know - the death penalty is just.

The EU and UN need to keep their collective noses out of other countries business. The UN would fold in a heartbeat if only the USA would kick it to the curb!

Little chance of that - they just rejected the HR 1146 bill that was to get us out of the UN. I heard only 74 true Americans voted for it.

A world ban on the DP? How thoughtful of the EU to make rules for the rest of us when they can't even follow their own.

Maybe only 74 voted on the bill but the thing is, is that number keeps going up everytime the bill is introduced.

I'm for banning the death penalty right after we successfully ban the crimes that the death penalty is applied to. But not a minute before.
