If we were already going into Liberia, Sharpton would be complaining about 'US hegemony', or some such silly nonsense. It's all about getting Al's name in the papers.

Then Sharpton should go to Liberia to ask Taylor to step down.
Bump!

"Do you think Al would be better or worse than Mugabe?" I'd be a close race. They're both stupid and racist.

Right, the Liberians have been killing each other for 13 years but those years didn't count because they happened during the Klintoon administration and/or before the American military was actually engaged in protecting America and Americans - Kosovo etc. don't count.
I can't believe Bush will let these people trick him into the quaqmire of sub-Saharan Africa. Blacks won't vote for him if he does go in there but he will learn the true meaning of the term tarbaby if he falls for this do it for "humanitarian" reasons crap. It's your enemies that want you in there, Dubya - France, American libs, Kofi Annan - puhleeze. That should tell you all you need to know. They want you over-extended so they can blame you for one more thing. You know, kind of like the dims that voted to support you in October and have been stabbing you in the back ever since ... in case you have forgotten. This ain't Austin - there will be no new tone with these people - ever.
If this cause is suddenly so vital after getting no attention for 13 years, let France and the UN handle it. How this gets any press at all is beyond me.

Ask Al if he thinks only black Americans should be the ones to go over too. I guess he doesn't agree with Charlie Rangel?

Bill Asks Equality If Draft is Needed
Washington Post
Two House Democrats introduced legislation last month to bring back the military draft, causing experts nationwide to debate whether or not minorities are disproportionately represented and killed while serving in the armed forces. They tell you that the military is voluntary, but that concept for blacks and poor whites is like a rat being dropped in a maze, says (University of Maryland) Academy Senior Scholar Ron Walters. The playing field outside the military is not level. Life structures you into certain choices, and you wind up in the military.

I thought that was the American communists in Spain. Of course communists and Al do seem to go together. Doesn't matter what they are.
The point is American volunteers can get their butts over there any time they want.

You can't send "peacekeeping troops" to a place currently at war. There is no "peace" to keep.

No, no, don't pick sides, then you might have to take a STAND for something and not be able to flip flop so easy. This is the key point. Pres. Bush has taken sides, and I presume Sharpton is loath to be on the same side. So instead he talks about sending peacekeepers. I guess we do too, but the problem is that:
a. There is no peace to keep
b. The existing leadership is the problem
Should we be the solution and overthrow the existing government? I'm unsure, but lean towards yes if and only if the best intelligence indicates that the task will be easy and that we can quickly exit afterwards.
As to whether it is our responsibility, it is true that the US founded Liberia, but that was an awful long time ago. So we don't have as much responsibility as, for example, the French have in Ivory Coast. Tough call.

Seems to me that this is an ideal job for Jesse Jackson! This may or may not be the point of Score's post, but Jackson bears great responsibility for the human rights disaster in several West African nations, including Liberia, due to his disgraceful, but US government-authorized, Clinton-era diplomacy:

I guess he doesn't agree with Charlie Rangel?Who does? The only question left is...which one is a bigger moron?
