#11 (Queen of Hearts) - Barzan abd al-Ghafur Sulayman Majid al-Tikriti - captured
CentCom briefing

Posted on 07/23/2003 5:47:53 AM PDT by steveegg

Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez, commander of Coalition forces in Iraq, mentioned that we caught #11 on the 55 most-wanted list at the end of his briefing this morning. #11 is Barzan abd al-Ghafur Sulayman Majid al-Tikriti, the commander of the Special Republican Guard, and the queen of hearts in the deck.

Sorry, I haven't seen a separate story on this yet, as the news web sites are still focusing on Udai and Qusai Hussein's deaths.

According to FL_engineer's latest update (as of Uday's and Qusay's deaths), Barzan's capture would make 37 either captured or dead.

I was listening to some news broadcast last night discussing all of those 16 remaining on the most wanted list... I commented to my son that they couldn't point out that 39 of them had been captured/killed. They had to emphasize that 16 remained (16 is the number brought up by this reporter, I am unsure of the count).

If one included Ali Hasan al-Majid (Chemical Ali - once believed to have been killed in an airstrike in Basra but now believed to have survived) and Sayf al-Din Fulayyih Hassan Taha al-Rawi (reported by The World Tribune as murdered by Saddam as we entered Baghdad, but not generally believed to be dead), it would be 39.

Reuters/Yahoo FINALLY has a story up (thanks, dead, for digging it up

U.S. Says Captures Saddam Guard Chief

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. forces have captured the commander of Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard, number 11 on a list of Washington's 55 most wanted Iraqis, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq said on Wednesday.

Lieutenant-General Ricardo Sanchez did not identify the person who was taken into custody by name, referring only to his number on the list.

But a Central Command statement later identified the person as Barzan Abd Al-Ghafur Sulayman Majid Al-Tikriti, Saddam's Special Republican Guard Commander.

Barzan was number 11 on lists previously provided by the U.S. authorities. He was also listed as the Queen of Hearts in a U.S. deck of cards on the most wanted Iraqis.

The latest detention brought to 37 the number of arrests out of the 55 Iraqis U.S.-led forces want detained.

Sanchez declined to say where Barzan was seized.

The detention was announced a day after U.S. troops killed Saddam's two sons, Uday and Qusay, in a firefight in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The two sons were listed as numbers two and three on the U.S. list. Saddam is number one, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

We're definitely running out of them. We've got almost all the clubs, can't get a straight anymore, and the only places to get a flush are spades (though one more spade capture takes that out of play) and diamonds.

Does this deck of cards have jokers? If not only 15 to go. Cool!

It has a pair of jokers, though those are reserved for translation of military ranks and a description of Arab titles. There are also 3 cards that don't have any face value, and one of those are captured. That makes it 17 to go.

**  Nine fugitives supposedly hiding in Syria? This seems to have been a smokescreen as FOUR have since been caught in or near Baghdad.
Note2: Also, Al-Rawi (J-of-spades) was reported by an Islamic newspaper as murdered
by Saddam and Qusay on 4/08/03... one day after the bombing of Saddam at the restaurant.

That list is starting to fill out quite nicely. Until yesterday it was a little thin at the top. I note that about a third of those remaining are supposedly in Syria.

Thanks for doing this.
