As a person who resides here, I can tell you that though the state is very liberal in many ways, the far left and the far right have usually enjoyed a peaceful coexistence and exchange of ideas and political capital that has resulted in a moderate society.

The problem the Democrats are having right now is very simple...They voted with the Republicans on Energy Deregulation and have no political cover for the energy crisis...In other words, they get caught with their hands in the cookie jar...

What I like about California is that within the same state, you can living in a very conservative (Orange) or very liberal (San Francisco) community. There is a place for everybody. Living in Orange County, I live very much knowing that this is a primarily conservative community. I know that there are lines that are not crossed here and it is actually very comforting. If it goes too far to the right, I can leave and not have to go far to find what I am looking for...If it starts to get a little too "enlightened", I can move ten miles Northwest and find what I want...

So, as a staunch moderate, I assume you live somewhere in the middle? :o)
