There is also a whole lot to blame to lay on Cuba's aristocracy, and their disdain for "El Negro" Batista, and his ex-maid First Lady; they supported Castro's revolution. Another thing that people do not seem to know is the fact that there were several groups fighting against Batista at the time, and that Castro literally stole his victory from another insurgent group.

Castro, however, did keep his cards very close to his chest.

My father figured him out from the start. My mother thought he was the greatest thing since Clark Gable......until he threw my maternal grandfather into the Cuban Gulag as a political prisoner.

In 1959, my uncle was fighting with Castro against the two-bit thug Batista as Castro had promised to restore the Constitution of 1940.

On April 17, 1961, after Castro had showed his true colors, that same uncle has hitting the beach at Playa Giron with Brigada 2506 to fight against Castro.

Cuba's trust in Castro may have been naive but Cuba's disdain for Fulgencio Batista, who betrayed the Cuban Constitution of 1940, was fully justified.

Batista was a thug if I recall. The NYT was praising Castro. We had no idea that a base for communist revolutionaries in SA and elsewhere would be established and sustained for over 40years.Chavez and Castro are great buddies.
