Urban League Warns Against Covert Racism
By CHARLES SHEEHAN
Associated Press Writer
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The new president of the National Urban League said Sunday that the number of blacks with bachelor's degrees is at an all-time high, but warned that success in the classroom is marred by rising incarceration rates and covert racism.
Census figures show that in 2002, 17 percent of blacks ages 25 and older had a bachelor's degree, a record high. But Marc Morial said that achievement is overshadowed by the number of blacks in jail.
There are 875,000 blacks incarcerated in the United States, Morial said, or one out of every seven black males ages 25 to 29.
"We must not be afraid to say to ourselves that we have much work to do," he said.
Morial, chosen two months ago to lead the venerable civil rights group, made his first national address during the organization's annual conference Sunday.
While discussing racism, he cited a passage from an essay by Robert Hill that was included in the Urban League's annual report. The essay said racism remains, but has taken a new form.
"There has been a strong shift from Jim Crow - the overt manifestation of racial hatred by individuals in white society - to James Crow, Esquire - the maintenance of racial inequality through covert processes of structure and institutions."
Much of the talk among those attending the second day of the convention concerned the differences between Hugh Price, who stepped down as president in May, and Morial.
Price was considered a tireless and cerebral organizer. Morial, a brash and sometimes controversial former mayor of New Orleans, has vowed to raise the group's profile.
President Bush is expected to address the conference Monday, although he has shunned sit-downs with established black groups. Seven of nine Democratic candidates for president also said they would participate in the conference Monday.

If those young black men were still on the street, the prison rate will be lower, but the crime rate (murder, rape and robbery victims) in the black community will go up. The black leadership still don't get it. Maybe the police should use a Cincinnati style enforcement boycott to teach them again.

(Former president Hugh) Price was considered a tireless and cerebral organizer. (New president Marc) Morial, a brash and sometimes controversial former mayor of New Orleans, has vowed to raise the group's profile.Be careful; under Price, the Urban League was a group that was more open to having rational conversation and discourse over the true issues in black America. I fear that Morial, in his quest to "raise the group's profile," will follow Julian Bond and NAACP toward the edge of the abyss.

So, the logic is that the chief Whitey sees the statistics of black college grads, takes his shoes off the desk and shouts into the intercom "Smithers! I want you to get out there and roust more poor blacks. If they score one BA, we're gonna throw one in the slammer to even the score!"
Yeesh.

FYI: The police in Oakland, California are now so busy with black on black crime that they rarely stop speeders. They haven't the time to issue tickets.

"There has been a strong shift from Jim Crow - the overt manifestation of racial hatred by individuals in white society - to James Crow, Esquire - the maintenance of racial inequality through covert processes of structure and institutions." In other words, they're trying to justify their continued existence. Heck, just about every large corporation has hypersensitivity for diversity, and even SCOTUS says reverse discrimination affirmative action is legal - so what the heck is he talking about here? The fact that there are still a few folks driving around with confederate flag licence plates on their pickups?

Tell me if I am wrong about this, please.
More blacks with Bachelors Degrees means more blacks off the nanny state. A discovery made my by self proclaimed "ex-ghetto b!tch" sister, who refused to go on the welfare roles even when she was pregnant with two 7 pound babies and couldn't stand up straight. More brothers and sisters who can take care of themselves means less voter base for those who promote "the children".
Am I on the wrong path here? If so, these people should be ashamed.

"Subtle" and "covert" are adjectives that people drag out to describe the things that nobody can see because they just made them up.
