Saudi man divorces wife minutes after marriage
Hindustan Times ^ | July 28 2003 | AFP

Posted on 07/28/2003 9:18:31 AM PDT by knighthawk

In what must rank as one of the world's shortest-lived marriages, a Saudi husband divorced his new wife immediately after the ceremony over a photo taken of the happy couple, a newspaper said on Monday.

The man was aggrieved at the bride's brother taking a photograph of the newly-weds to keep as a memento, Al-Madinah reported.

After being dissuaded from attacking his brother-in-law, the man promptly divorced his wife of minutes.

The strict form of Islamic law in force in the kingdom allows Saudi men to have up to four wives, whom they may divorce by simple repudiation without any formal process.

Neal Boortz was talking about Islamic divorce this morning. He said it is Islamic law that a man has just to repeat three times out loud that he wants a divorce and the divorce is legal. It seems that some cleric just ruled that you can also "text message" a message three times to the wife and it is also legal. What a religion!

Just a guess, but I think the ex-bride is much better off without being married to this fellow.

She should be thankful, since these stories about dissed Arab males, often involve violent death. With this husband from hell, she wouldn't have lived through the wedding night.

Mobiles spell out DIVORCE for Malaysians By John Burton in Hong Kong Published: July 27 2003 20:13 | Last Updated: July 27 2003 20:13

Firing employees by text message, as Accident Group, the UK insurer, did recently, may seem brutal. But Malaysia has gone one step further by allowing local Muslim men to use the same method to get divorced.

It represents a high-technology update to the ancient practice under Islamic Sharia law of permitting men to end a marriage by repeating the simple phrase talaq (I divorce thee) three times.

An Islamic law court in Malaysia has said it recognised the divorce of Shamsudin Latif after he sent a text message to his wife declaring: "If you don't leave your parents' house, you'll be divorced."

The ruling was endorsed by Abdul Hamid Othman, the government's religious adviser, who said that if the message was clear and unambiguous, it was valid under Sharia law. "SMS [short messaging service] is just another form of writing," he told a local newspaper.

Whether SMS divorces will become popular in Malaysia, where nearly everyone seems to have a mobile phone, is still questionable. The ruling shocked traditionalists since most pronouncements of divorce are normally made orally either in the presence of a kadi, an Islamic jurist, or directly to the wife.

Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, women and family development minister, said SMS divorces were "unacceptable". "It is dishonourable to pronounce the divorce in such a way to a wife who have given so much in the marriage."

But married Malaysian Muslim women may now feel particular unease every time they hear the "beep, beep" of a text message.

Muslims are the enemies of logic. As if it hasn't been proven time and time again, along comes this guy, who gets so mad at his new brother-in-law taking a picture of him and his new bride (what's up w/ that, btw), that he wants to attack the brother-in-law, but instead opts to divorce his wife.

So, what happens to the woman? Is she allowed to remarry, or is she disgraced-for-life?

Charming folks, our friends the Saudis.
