I had to call my mother after hearing about his death. She related a story to me that I had not heard before. This story personifies everything I've always thought and felt about this Man.
My dad went to pick up Bob and his Program director. A lady by the name of Ana Morrow I think is how you spell her name, at the Anderson AFB terminal. The officers had made all kinds of plans for him to come to the O-club to entertain them in a private show. Evidently Bob had other plans. Upon hearing that his first stop was going to be at the O-club, he intervened and said "No, take me to the enlisted man's club."
The orders were promptly followed and he was taken to the enlisted club where he took over the stage and gave these young airmen the show of their lives. I think she said he stayed on that stage entertaining these guys for 2 or 3 hours. Completely unprepared, 100% unexpected. But there he was. The King of one-liners performing for these young GI's so far from home. In an enlisted club no less. What a guy.
