A fifth of black Americans say they carry guns to school
Jul 28 2003
GUN culture has reached an alarming new level among American teenagers, research revealed yesterday.
A fifth of black American youths told a survey they carried a gun during high school.
The study showed that 15% carried a gun occasionally - and one in 20 carried one regularly.
More than 80% of regular gun-carriers had used a weapon - a gun or knife - to threaten another person.
Boys were three times more likely than girls to carry a gun regularly, and twice as likely to carry one occasionally.
Selling drugs and fighting were both associated with carrying guns, especially among the regular carriers.
The study was intended to shed light on the reasons why more African-American teenagers die as a result of being shot than from any other cause.
US researchers interviewed 682 urban African-American students each year throughout high school. Those who dropped out of school continued to take part in the study.
Each student was asked how many times in the past 12 months he or she had carried a gun. Possible answers ranged from none to four times or more.
One in five teenagers confessed to carrying a gun at least once. Regular carriers had a gun in their possession an average of 2.5 times a year.
Dr Kenneth Steinman of Ohio State University said, "The good news is that the vast majority of youths in this study never carried a gun.
"But one in five is still a disturbingly high number."
The findings, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, showed that selling drugs and fighting were the most common activities associated with guns.
Dr Steinman believes carrying a gun should not be lumped together with general delinquency and substance abuse.
"Those kinds of behaviours are often limited to youthful experimentation during adolescence and have a lot to do with peer influence," he said.

This is shite; misleading headline and all BS; the Welsh, as the good people they are, should write about something that affects them and leave the US to us.

I remember taking a school drug survey when I was in about the 9th grade. Whatever it asked -- marijuana, LSD, heroin -- I said that I did it I did because, well, at age 15 it just seemed like a hilarious idea. Actually it seems kind of funny now.
The moral is: don't trust surveys of teenagers.

GUN culture has reached an alarming new level among American teenagers, research revealed yesterday. A fifth of black American youths told a survey they carried a gun during high school.
“GUN Culture”? Am I part of the “GUN Culture”? Do I qualify as a member if I own a gun? Would that make me somehow responsible for the misuse of guns?
If I take medicine, does that make me a part of the “DRUG culture”?
These are buzzwords that the leftist concoct and systematically introduce into the American vernacular to advance their agenda.
I’m sure we could think of another dozen such terms with out too much effort.
They belong to the left; Refuse to use them.

I believe the second amendment gives them a right to carry a gun anywhere they want. I carry mine all the time. Carried it into a school just the other day and didnt shoot anybody while I was there.

Well, we were told where the "study" was published, but we still don't know who did the research, or their methodology, do we?
If this Dr. Steinman was involved, the article doesn't clearly say so, and who the heck is he anyway?
To: Khepera
Good for you. Somebody has got to do it. The last thing I would want to be is a victim.

I don't know who this guy is, however there *seems* to be an increased attack on our gun rights from overseas lately. Could be wrong or just paying attention more?

I'm stupid. I worry about where to carry, and since I mostly go places where they are forbidden, such as schools, and have a 5 year old who still gets into things that don't belong to her, I'm not. But more and more I'm wondering why I am not.
The criminals have all the rights.

Absolutely. I remember a sex survey when I was in High School. Everyone put down the most atrocious answers their juvenile minds could come up with.

My children have been exposed to me carring a gun all their lives. They don't think about it too much. I have never had to tell them not to touch my gun. They just don't. I don't usually leave it out to tempt them but I dont lock it up or use a trigger lock. people who use trigger locks may as well not have a gun.

I think I'd like to "see his work" as we were told in math class. ;-) Yes, me too. For instance, an occasional fist fight might not be evidence of abnormal or delinquent behavior, but I think use of guns or knives would cross that line - and I find it hard to understand why the doctor doesn't think so.

My husband grew up that way. He fired a gun for the first time when he was 4. He ended up on his butt, of course. Respect for firearms comes naturally under those circumstances!

This is curious. How could one glamorize thuggery if said thuggery did not already exist? Methinks perhaps you've confused cause and effect?
