I'll see your Cross pen and raise you a MontBlanc Meisterstick Le Grand. Pressure applied at appropriate points does wonders for pacification. (And with more style.) But I am boycotting French products.

The point being that the TSA can't keep weapons off planes because darn near anything can be fashioned into an effective weapon with only a small amount of imagination.

I honestly hope the TSA and the Feds are being disingenuous when it comes to their anal retentiveness - because the only other valid conclusion is that they're just hopelessly stupid at the highest levels.

I'll see yer Cross Bic and raise ya the metal hinges on my samsonite briefcase, a roll of quarters and a large bandana !!

I see your Samsonite briefcase hinges and raise my backthorn cane/walking stick with a metal tip that will accept said cross pen as a full size poinard/battle mace. I note I can go into a court house carrying it with no questions and it certainly does the job if needed besides I am sometimes needing it to get about comfortably these days.

Passengers...that is what has stopped them so far. As a somewhat frequent flyer, I'd gladly give my life to take away an opportunity for mass casualties from these bastards. Bring it on!

Agreed, now the majority of passengers will assume that the plane will be crashed if the hijackers take control....changing everything.

If I have to fly I hope you're on the plane too! I'm just an arthritic grandma!

I'd be shocked if every able bodied man and woman didn't grab any available blunt object and beat that terrorist(s) to death. Laptops, keys, purses, tray tables, chair arms - anything. Yeah, some of the good guys might get hurt, but there won't be enough terrorist left to fill up a mop bucket.

Actually, I think the biggest reason there hasn't been any similar hijackings is passenger knowledge coupled with security. With beefed-up security, it is much less likely that a "crowd control" weapon (like a gun) can get through - we're continuously talking about knives etc. These weapons cannot be used to keep a group of people under control. The old paradigm was "OK, the stewardess has a knife to her neck; if no one does anything stupid, everyone will be safe." The new paradigm is "OK, the stewardsess has a knife to here neck; if no one does anything, we'll all die"
Basically, the hijackers have no (easy) way of controlling all the passengers - the old ways of fear and bullets have been greatly reduced

In light of recent reports concerning the possiblilty of more airliner take-over attempts, there has never been a better case for "racial profiling".

Oh, you're feelings have been hurt?

I'm sorry, but let's review.....

What has stopped them so far? Prob the memory of the brave passangers on 9-11 kicking their tails all the way to the ground.

I doubt that there will ever again be a organized terrorist hijacking of an airline in order to use it as a bomb. With passenger awarness as it is, and the reinforment of cockpit doors, the chances of success are very small.

It has been my observation that terrorists seem to find the path of least resistance to exploit. The next big attack in this country will be something that has not been attempted before. I have several ideas, but I refuse to speculate on this forum for obvious reasons.

I hope and pray our homeland securuty is also thinking as I do and implementing preventative plans behind the scenes for such scenarios. I hope there is a think tank of wise Tom Clancy type people who think outside the box and keep us one step ahead of the jihadists.

We need to be pro-active. Being reactive is a recipe for another 9/11.

If it is a fact that the terrorists didn't know they were going to die that day, they are probably having difficulty finding volunteers to do it again.

Glad to see the fibbies are on their toes.

< /sarcasm >

More worrisome are real weapons and explosives hidden inside cameras, computers, shampoo bottles etc.

Speaking of weapons on airplanes, here it is almost two years after 9/11, and we still don't have armed pilots on airplanes. Granted, there are a few going through training now, but they are a drop in the bucket.

Our bureaucracy travels at blindingly glacial speeds. One can only pray Al Qaeda does the same!

You mention a Cross pen. Well, I love fountain pens and have a bunch of Cross models. But my day-to-day writing instrument is a Rotring "Newton" -- a sturdy lump of German steel casing culminating in a needle-like nib. Check it out here (scroll down, it's the second picture):

http://www.rotring.de/www.rotring.com/index.html

I fly all the time, and while the McDonald's rejects at security have seized my nail clipper, not once have they raised an eybrow about my Rotring. Just as well, too. If some sand goblin causes trouble on my next flight, he'll get the point.

TEXASPROUD, I'll see your cross pens, and raise you all the "Super Cane". Now, I just happen to use one of these on a daily basis, and I can assure you from experience that with a little improvisation, this can be an extremely useful defense tool..... to see one click HERE

I had to search for a pix, this is the best I could do..

Don't take a knife to a gun fight. That is unless the pilot isn't armed. They are, aren't they?

Well that settles it. We must all fly totally nude, have body "cavities" examined first, and be permitted NO carry-ons whatsoever.

Sounds like a party I won't want to miss!

Anyone here like the mini mag on the lanyard? After you crack someone on the head with it you can use the light to see if his pupils dilate.
If so, crack him again!

Oh, just great.

And I'm off to the airport this morning.

Alaska Flight 11. Hope it makes it!
