Kennedy Backs Off On Wind Farm Amendment
POSTED: 10:54 a.m. EDT July 31, 2003 UPDATED: 10:56 a.m. EDT July 31, 2003
BOSTON -- Sen. Edward Kennedy has decided against sponsoring legislation that would give governors veto-power over off-shore wind farms -- like the one being proposed for Nantucket Sound.
Kennedy and Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee had been drafting the amendment to the federal energy bill. It's possible that Alexander may still go ahead with it.
A spokeswoman for Kennedy said he still has concerns about the proposal to build 130 wind turbines in the waters off Cape Cod, and supports the idea of regulatory approval for such projects. But he apparently feels there isn't enough to properly draft the amendment before the Senate acts on the bill.
If Congress did give governors veto-power, it might strike a death knell for the Cape Wind plan -- since Gov. Mitt Romney has spoken out against it in the past.
Who is it that is involved in the Nantucket Sound Wind Turbine project that actually greased Fat Teddy and for how much?
