Mars is covered with muddy lakes. They are connected by canals, I believe.

The lakebeds and canals are long-since dry. The only apparent water remaining on Mars exists in a frozen state on the polar caps...though there is some speculation about liquid water under the Martian topsoil.

This is a fairly interesting bit of reporting, though...considering the Mars' atmosphere is carbon dioxide and there may be mineral-rich water available to sustain such organisms.

No way of telling 'til we find it, though.
