Hillary: I'm Grateful I Grew up in 'White Suburbs'
NewsMax.com ^ | 8/03/03 | Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

Posted on 08/03/2003 1:10:35 PM PDT by kattracks

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton said Friday that she was "very grateful" to have to grown up in "the 1950's white suburbs."

Contending that conservatives wanted to roll back the civil rights movement, Sen. Clinton told the American Constitution Society in Washington, D.C. that she was trying to figure out, "What is that golden age that they want to go back to?"

Then, in a remark reminiscent of Sen. Trent Lott's praise last year for the segregationist presidential campaign of the late Strom Thurmond, the former first lady asked if conservatives meant to take the country "back to the 1950's white suburbs for family life, which I grew up in and write about in my book - and am very grateful for."

Despite expressing gratitude for the all-white surroundings of her Park Ridge, Chicago youth, Sen. Clinton told the ACS that her hometown "didn't exactly describe the universal experience in America."

She said it was a time "before Brown v Board, when people were told that in this country we should to try to integrate our schools."

Though Sen. Clinton's comments were televised on C-Span, her praise for the "white suburbs" of her youth has so far gone unreported by the mainstream press.

The former first lady's full remarks on the topic went like this:

"There are just a lot of things that happened in the 20th Century that some people apparently just couldn't get over. So starting in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s - and with greater acceleration and commitment in the 70s until the current time - there has been a commitment to trying to go back to some golden age.

"Walter Dellinger and I were talking about a panel that will be held tomorrow to try to figure out, exactly what was that golden age that they want to go back to?

"You know, is it back to the 1950's white suburbs for family life, which I grew up in and write about in my book - and am very grateful for, but didn't exactly describe the universal experience in America?

"Is it back before Brown v Board, when people were told in this country we should try to integrate our schools and provide equal opportunity in fact, not just in theory?

"Is back before the New Deal, and many of the changes that actually saved capitalism in the eyes of many historians?

"Is it back to before the Progressive era, when children were told that they could no longer work in factories and immigrants were being given the rights and tools to assume a roll in American society?

"Is it back to crony capitalism and the robber baron area [sic]. I don't know. I think it's a combination of all of that." [End of Excerpt]

No hillary!. Its the time when God wasn't considered "the enemy", a view foisted on this country by the likes of you. It was the time when people were expected to accept responsibility for their actions. It was a time when decency wasn't frowned upon. It was a time when families meant something. And most especially, it was the time when you and your ilk weren't defended by the media, and wouldn't have been able to get elected for the job as dogcatcher.

When the schools were integrated in my hometown, the black kids lost their beautiful neighborhood school (which happened to be the ONLY public school that was air conditioned at the time! - a BIG deal in a very hot Texas town), they lost their football team, their cheerleaders, their student council, their class beauties and class favorites - they were divided up and bussed all over town.......

It seemed very unfair to me, and was devastating to them - I still don't think it was a good thing to do - not because I didn't want black kids in my school - but it seemed like a horrible idea to tear them away from their neighborhoods and friends and school pride and tradition.........

Yet Hillary keeps shoving how great it all was down our throats - sure, for some people it might have been a better opportunity - for the kids in my town it was horrible......

...Okay...I'm not one to hold people responsible for every stupid comment they make...But we should be honest here...If Ms. Clinton were a Republican and made the same comment the political fallout would end her political career overnight...The leftists characterize the Republicans as racist...Okay...Whatever...But we should hold everyone to the same standard...The press and special interest groups [NAACP, etc.] have been awfully silent about Senator Byrd's past...I can't recall any Republican Conressman or Senator actually being a 'card-carrying' member of the KKK who has recently used the 'N'-word publicly...If they want to hold people like Trent Lot accountable for making a stupid comment...Fine...But it 'cuts-both-ways'...Ms. Clinton should have to pay the same political price...

A friend of mine, who votes Democrat, once sent me some interesting quotes from Byrd denouncing homeland security and the Patriot Act. Reacting to his letter as another Democrat would from a Republican I wondered openly about why he would let the words of a racist speak for him? I then asked what other character traits he shared in common with the ol' klansman.

My goodness! He backpedaled so hard and fast that my modem started smoking as soon as I opened his reply!

Here's my political psychoanalysis of Hillary's comment that she was "very grateful" for having grown up in the white suburbs.

Note that the "very grateful" words came at the very end of the sentence.

I believe that Hillary got to the end of her statement, and realized that her comment could be interpreted as an insult to the millions of swing voters (who she must carry to become President)who live in the suburbs.

So, in her haste to avoid insulting them, she added the "very grateful" comment, not focusing on the implicit racial overtones.

It does seem like a golden age when you read or see things about it at first...but then I have my grandparents' and other relative's accounts of the 1950's during Jim Crow, and you realize that blacks were held outside of the melting pot and the American dream. The 1950's were great if you were white, but as for me I know I would rather live right now then any other time. It is a shame that many black people continue to fallow in victimhood instead of taking advantage of having all the opportunities our ancestors were denied.

Sorry for the rant, I was actually thinking about this subject this past week.

Ah jeez, first we have the ~Hill's Angles~, er, Angels, saying the VRWC is pasting her as anti-family, child, etc. and now this bit of drivel attempting to paint conservatives as pre-Brown, pre-Lemon Law, WASP, White, anti-immigrant, and anti-New Deal.

Man, does she have to make this any easier? And this broad, er, woman is considered first rate intellectually?

Well, I suppose this is what you get when you pander to the stupid voter. A few good phrases can put her on the defensive, and the entire Progressive nasties on the run.

After all, we underestimated the Clinton banalities that appealed to the voter: ~It's the economy, Stupid.~
That won't happen again.

There is nothing quite as disgusting as a Liberal, self-serving politician on the make for a quotable sound bite!

I have an answer for her. That "golden age" predated she and her husband's lyin', thievin', stealin', traitorous reign of maladministration on this suffering country!

Nonsense. Look at the census data, everyone who has the least amount of African in their heritage is falling all over themselves to claim that they are black. Look at Halle Berry. Raised by a white mom and surround in her six year old birthday picutre with white children. Now she is just another "sister" and talks about being black.

To be fair, this whole "biracial" concept is pretty new- I don't remember the term being used until about 1990 or so. Before that time, and certainly in the 1950's, if you had one-drop of black blood you were considered black period.

Not a rant, and perfectly understandable, but are you saying that blacks aren't affected by the things I mentioned? No, much of my grandparents' and my parents' early childhood in the 50's was traditional. They have good memories of that times as well as bad ones. My point is that there are good things and bad things about both then and now- on the whole, however, I prefer now, with all the opportunities today, to back then. One can still live a moral life and raise a traditional family today- it just has become harder as there are more distractions and temptations.

Agreed, but the distractions and temptations have been brought about because of a society which has been told repeatedly that morals are "out" and people are not to blame for the things they do because of "circumstances". A society which has been told that God is no longer important to our nation.

hillary, and the other vermin like her that infest this country, have done nothing but try to break down the fundamentals on which this country were founded.

No one benefits from that. Except for hillary, and her America hating friends.

It had nothing to do with better opportunity, it was about fed control over local schools. The centralized government elites thought they knew better how to run schools, and insisted on telling the uncivilized local yocals how to do things. The same enemies defined by the civil war.

Not only that, but when someone describes a person who looks like Halle Berry(forget the fact that she's gorgeous) they will describe her as a black woman, not a white woman, even though she is half white.

Plus, children also tend to start segregating themselves around the junior high age.
