Last month in Washington, 50 people attended a private screening of actor Mel Gibson's new film, "The Passion," about the last 12 hours in the earthly life of Jesus Christ.

We were required to sign a confidentiality agreement, promising not to write or speak about the film without permission. That restriction has now been lifted.

Compared with examples of recent Christian films ("Left Behind" is one of many very bad ones in this genre), "The Passion" is a work of high art and great storytelling.

Excellent. Whatever else a Christian film should be, it should first be "high art and great storytelling." We've accepted too many "Christian" books and movies that are poorly written pop-genre quality. The story of Christ deserves the best.

BTW, I plan never to see the Left Behind series or read the books. It would be like reading cheap mass-produced formula-laden genre novels instead of Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, or Jane Austen. I'd sooner read the labels on cans.

You're right -- Left Behind, etc., is not for everyone. I'd heartily recommend, though, two of Ted Turner's productions: Abraham, and Joseph. The latter is the finest Biblical film I've ever seen; and the former is awesome, with Richard Harris and Barbara Hershey. Here's hoping that the Passion is better still, because the subject matter is the ultimate.
